Should I quit before I get fired?

OP I can give you my perspective as someone who was recently in this situation but fortunately was able to move to a better office within my same organization, which I have been with for over a decade. The behavior my managers displayed was incredibly toxic, including telling me that my work was worthless, blaming everything that went wrong on me, threatening me with being fired, etc.

I stuck it out, documented, waited for them to make a mistake in writing, and filed an EEO complaint. Then my new boss was able to move me over. So I am out of the bad situation and my old bosses are under scrutiny.

As hard as it is, quitting is not the answer. I was losing sleep, gaining weight, you name it. You have to find a new position first. It’s a terrible market and looking without a job will make it worse.

I would stay on and get terminated and try to negotiate a generous severance. There are special rules employers must follow when terminating employees over age 40.


That not really true. There are special rules they need to follow if they want you to waive your right to bring an age discrimination claim. But not special rules just to fire you.

OP, we need more information. Are you in fed or private sector? Are you currently on a PIP? If not on a PIP, are you told a PIP is coming?How you feel about it being someone else’s decision should not factor into your decision here.

Private sector; am not on a PIP. Was told the term was due to a reorg and loss of clients but across the firm, the most recent terminations have all been employees age 50+. I’m going to wait it out for severance.
