The toll road itself is never backed up. Not even during rush hour. But yes, OP should take the airport only lanes. |
| Go to the Marriott onsite and buy some coffee and hang in their lobby? |
You're telling OP to drive to Manassas to wait for her child? Do you know anything about this area at all? That's nowhere near the airport and in the opposite direction. OP could wait in Reston Town Center or Dulles Town Center if she wants but not Manassas for goodness sake! |
| He’ll be fine taking the metro! Even with bags. |
| I’d opt for Washington Flyer. Right out front, no searching for your Lyft and no coordinating with you for pick up/timing. I recently did this twice from IAD to DC near Silver Spring and it was $80 before tip. He will still have traffic but you will be home and have dinner waiting! |
|
I pick up my family from IAD all the time and we live in Bethesda. Traffic coming home is often worse than getting to the airport. Maybe stop in Tysons for dinner after you pick him up, if traffic is terrible.
It will not be too bad to get to Dulles (def use the airport lanes) from Bethesda - even on a Friday before a long weekend. Do not leave your house until his plane is at the gate if you know he will take a long time via immigration. Park in cell phone lot until he exits. If you need to use the bathroom, go to Marriott or gas station near cell phone lot. |
| I would 100% metro in this situation. |
| I would be more excited about seeing my son and less annoyed at sitting in traffic and I wouldn't be saying "ugh" and I would send my child they message that they are worth waiting for by not changing their flight. |
Hell no. Traffic will not be that bad. DC metro is terrible as you need to go all the way into DC then back out to get to Bethesda and who wants to the that and transfer with luggage? OP- just arrive early and suck it up/expect it will take longer to get home. Half the ride will be on the airport road then take the HOV north until the bridge. It is what it is. Traffic rom the bridge to Bethesda won't be that bad. |
+1 us the time in traffic to talk. Not a big deal. |
Yeah just go to one of those and park at Starbucks or B&N. |
Do you know nothing about the area? This is a terrible idea and nowhere near Dulles. |
Agree. Why send a message that it’s not a convenient time to pick you up? It’s not every week, it’s once a year? |
+1 million on this. |
I would order him an Uber, given the uncertainty of arrival time and going through airport process. I drive/cross over the beltway via Bradley most Friday afternoons/early evenings, driving out to Potomac from Bethesda. The outer loop below is bumper to bumper jammed every Friday, and still that way an hour+ later on my return drive via Bradley. This is a regular, non-holiday standard. Winding your way down and accessing via River might help, but given what I've seen Waze and other nav systems send people all through the neighborhoods, down Wilson, etc. to avoid Friday, and sometimes Saturday outer loop travel into NVa. |
