So- those of you with kids graduating making 50-75k in NYC, are they financially independent?

My DC is making $50,000 in NYC. We pay the rent plus a $$ buffer as needed.

I'm assuming doing an internship before going to law school?

No, they’ve had two law-related internships already. This is a two year paralegal position. But then, yes, probably law school.

I started at 35k as an ICU RN BSN at Hopkins in 1998. Now this job would start at 75k.

I don’t know what it is today, but I remember being thrilled in the mid 1990’s making low-mid 30’s out of college. I remember thinking that if I can make at least as much as it cost per year for the private college, I’m doing well!

I started at $18,000 per year in Boston in 1986 and saved $20,000 over two years.

The secret was having roommates, not having a car and having small student loan payments.

I would plan for $30,000 or $40,000.

I think the days of typical 22-year-old hires getting $75,000 per year are mostly gone.

completely false

What kinds of jobs are you thinking of?

You’re responding to me here, and I’m thinking of nonprofit jobs, journalism jobs and other jobs where even experienced people may have a hard time getting more than $100,000.

Why? Why not let him get roommates and learn to be an adult?

Seriously? Do you know how much rent is in NYC? Yes, of course they have roommates. In fact, they are living in flex room.

Consulting of course. They hire humanities students all the time, from ivies and similar. They recruit on campus.

50k would be hard but 60+k is doable with no parental support in NYC provided roommates and good budgeting.

2025 grad 80k management. Started just a few days after graduation so coming up on annual review. Will report back.

VP made the offer and asked the minimum salary he would accept. 75k + upward mobility. I literally lmao when he called with that detail, didn't know he had it in him!

Contract signed at 80k. VP told him you'll ride with me.

My nephew works at a FAANG company in an AI-specific CS role. Started at $135k for a 100% remote job out of college.

If that’s true are stretching the meaning of FAANG or AI, or you don’t know how RSU’s and bonus work.
