My junior appears to be working hard. Taking 18 credits, one of those for undergrad research that has her in the lab every day. I'd encouraged her to take one less class so she'd have more time for internship search but she argued that she only had three semesters left and wanted to fit in as many classes as she could so she could learn more before graduating. Hard to argue with that. But, she did at least switch her one gen ed class this semester to pass/no pass because it's looking like she'll get a B.

She's at a LAC where class attendance is expected, participation in discussion is part of the grade

My stepsons went to MCPS and seem to consider assignment deadlines optional. I don't know why they are not catching on to the fact that in college, you need to turn assignments in, and you need to turn them in on time.

Which school is this? Yes most profs hate teaching.

UMD, CM/math major.

I will say that DC is one of those kids who walks into a class and finishes their test in 15min and gets 100% or near to, especially in math. Most of their classes is math/CS since they had tons of credits going in. DC is taking mostly 400 level classes. DC did say that they had to study more for their 300 level classes.

Yep, MCPS is doing kids no favors, especially with the 50% rule (which they have amended), and no finals.

How are you a professor and don’t know how to do this?

What classes have required attendance? What happens to students who miss a class?

Ikd be against this in most situations since the students should be learning how to independently manage their time and understanding that their decisions will have consequences.

Mine knows approximately how much each class costs me. I’m a single mom and the only one paying for college. He rarely skips class and if he does, it’s for an internship interview. I made it crystal clear to him that I work my butt off for not a lot of money (I’m a teacher) so he doesn’t waste what is being given to him. If other kids do, that’s how they were raised. He’s always had summer jobs and used some of that money to pay for school. He pays for his own meal plan and sometimes he comes home on the weekends with three or four meals so he doesn’t waste any meal swipes.

I’ll meet your anecdotal with mine. My kid graduated from MCPS and regularly receives A+ on exams and when the average is a C at their top 20 college. Work ethic hasn’t changed regardless of grading policy. Assignments were submitted on time then and now.

Sure, my kid is the same. 4.0 dual cs/math major from a magnet program.

But for the vast majority of students, MCPS policies did not help. I have another DC who is not as academically advanced, and Mcps' policies haven't prepared my DC well for college, and I'm guessing, most students are more like this DC than my 4.0 DC.

These days it’ll likely be very major dependent. The engineering students are likely all working very hard regardless of what school they go to. Same with the pre-meds shooting for medical school. Those students can’t afford to drift.

But there’s no doubt AI and phones are killing this generation’s ability to concentrate. I come from the slacker generation, but Gen Z is really outshining Gen X. Might as well call them the dumbass generation.
