UMD Accepted Students Day March 7

Student/advisor panels clearly explained academic opportunities well but DS did not feel anyone was actually supporting anyone else, all grinding away individually. No sense of community at all. Said he wouldn't even keep considering it w/o in-state tuition benefit.

+1

Based on the schedule, you either went to "academic sessions" or toured the school. Not enough time to do both.

What do you mean?

Maybe all was done through AI, not a "holistic" approach.

If you or your kid requires an over done show and/or hand holding then UMD is not for you.

They did have energy and engagement pre-pandemic. My DC loved admitted students day then, with the band, cheerleaders, Testudo etc. but I remember a special reception for Engineering. Maybe that was a separate day.

I disagree, in 2019 my kid- presidential scholarship, honors college and admitted student day was a complete sh*t sh*w! the parking, the timeline, the bus driver got caught up in construction. At UMD they don't care if you go or not. My kid went, loved it, has a great job and made lifelong friends. The school thinks of you as number and it is what it is.

Funny my Freshman at UMD got a huge packet with Old Bay everything and lots of UMD swag and we were so excited to get accepted. This year, she is on the welcoming team for admitted students. She is absolutely loving her life there! I am so glad to be a Terp and they are glad to have my child.

My kid had exact same experience last year. Ruled off the list. They really made us feel like they could not care if he enrolled or not.

UMD is real life.

Did she get this after she committed? My daughter was accepted but has not committed yet, and so far she has received one postcard and a lanyard.

UMD does not prioritize admitted students' day. There's not even enough spots for people who want to attend. And yet, they have no trouble filling their first year class.

However, they do a fabulous job with Maryland Day which is open to everyone! It's a fun way to experience what UMD has to offer.

Interesting. Our DC went with DH yesterday and came home excited. They went to academic sessions and came home with lots of info. DC said all the students she interacted with were nice and welcoming.

Why are UMD building built like prisons? I found the campus utterly depressing.

OK? Your kid’s potential spot will now be snapped up by someone else who is more focused on actual academics and student life and not preview events.

Everyone, especially exhausted teens, would like to feel wanted.

My kid chose a SLAC in part because she values individual attention and personalized treatment.

Wallflowers who need hand-holding and value it over opportunities and excellence should absolutely avoid research-focused state flagships that are a few Metro stops away from Washington, DC.

Good! The SLAC grads have lots of competent employees to hire.

Kind of difficult for a big state university to accomplish. You were accepted. Constant reinforcement should definitely look elsewhere as yours did.

That's sort of the point. Public education operates in lower gear compared to private education. Less happens.

They need to celebrate the kids who will be their future students. Parents pay a lot in tuition and these kids have other opportunities. Plus it’s just the right thing to do! We were there in 2018 and it was fantastic! Of course, there were no Zoom sessions then etc. it was all in person, and yes that was better.
