| I hate it. All I can think of is Josh Duggar. |
Stefan Urquelle But I'm GenX so maybe it doesn't matter to OP's kid |
| I cringed when I saw this thread. Every Josh that I’ve ever known has been a little (little may be an understatement) weird and/or prone to legal issues. The one that I’ve known the longest is currently in federal prison for committing wire fraud. |
The only challenges with Stefan are people spelling it or saying it wrong (do you want STEF-in or ste-FAHN?) I do like Joshua as well, and know people from various generations with the name. Classic but not common. |
Steffin |
Pronouncing Stefan as ste-FAHN just seems like someone trying to be fancy to me. I’m sure that is probably a common pronunciation in other countries, but English speakers pronouncing it that way comes off as pretentious. |
| I like how the OP asked for opinions on Joshua and there are more comments about Stefan than Joshua. That tells you all you need to know about Joshua. 😂 Nobody really likes it. |

I think it's a great name with a great shortform too. Surprised you are getting mixed reactions. It's common enough and not generational but not too common / trendy either.
What's the issue? |
And Josh Shapiro. Yes I feel like a dork, ha |
Or it isn’t objectionable enough to discuss. |
I think American Jews are opting for more recognizably Jewish names for our kids these days. Names like Joshua, David, and Michael have become more ambiguous and associated with Christianity, so they’re less used. I can’t say that I’ve met any Jewish Joshuas born within the last 25 years. |

I love the name Josh and pushed hard for it with both kids, but DH was a hard no.
But I agree with the PPs that if you tell people IRL what you’re planning to name the baby they will have all kinds of thoughts about it and share them with you. Keep they name to yourself until you’ve given it to the baby and they will keep their thoughts about it to themselves. |
I know two who are in elementary school with my kids. |
This and no one liked them. Bad name association |
Accurate. The ones I went to school with were the type to correct teachers constantly. They were know-it-alls and usually jerks. |
