Anyone have a story of a kid doing EA to UVA and RD to W&M?

W&M meets your FAFSA EFC need in state so if you can't be bothered to run that and the NPC by Nov it's not a "wealth" issue

I just posted. Yes, 100%.

He knows it would be a boost to apply ED to one or the other, but I am pushing him to keep options open -- he's somewhat of a late bloomer and I think he'll have a better sense of which school he likes more later in senior year, rather than right at the beginning of senior year.

Any success stories of students (willing to share stats would be great) who did this -- applied Early Action to UVA, Regular Decision to W&M (they don't seem to have Early Action), got into both and could go to admitted students days and make a smart, informed decision?

What are his stats, ECs and intended major? The strategy depends on his profile.

Our DD did in 2022, so a bit old by now.

Accepted EA to UVA and RD to W&M.

Did an in-person tour and online info session for W&M. Might have helped DD was a Posse finalist, though not matched to W&M, but had them as first choice.

My 2025 boy also EA admit to UVA and RD admit to W&M (with Monroe Scholar). It happens. Good luck.

Are they both boys? may I ask their stats roughly?

1 boy 1 girl. DS had a 4.2 GPA and 1470 SAT. DD 4.5 GPA and 1450 SAT

This is interesting… I know kids not getting accepted at UVA with 1530+ SAT and 4.3 gpa

Right because the stats are high school specific. Check your school’s naviance/scior data. Knowing some random person’s stats from who knows what year isn’t particularly helpful.

It is much harder to get in EA to UVA than ED.

I know this is the right answer. But I have seen my kid change quite a bit from the end of sophomore year until now (midway through junior year) and I hate him having to make a firm commitment October of senior year.

Not sure if you have navigated a teen boy before, but the change between sophomore and junior year maturity-wise is pretty big generally speaking, and it's much less so between summer before and end of senior year. By December of senior year they're pretty ready to fly the coop, no matter where they go to college. The poster who mentioned UVA ED and WM EDII has a great strategy if these are the top 2 schools for your kid, given their ED admissions rate is higher by a decent margin.

You are deferred to regular decision. Will hear in April. No longer binding.

It's a form of yield protection and frankly, I wish every school offered ED.

Yield protection is rejecting those who will likely reject you. If the prospect is applying ED, they aren't going to be rejecting you. It is a form of yield management.

My BFF's son loved UVA and it was his top choice. He applied EA ended up not getting in, but got into William and Mary RD. He ended up loving the school. Had tons of friends, joined a frat, graduated a semester early and now he's landing some interesting work experiences. I worked out well for him. He was pretty devastated at the time about UVA.

Wait so you're telling me the dcum stereotypes are totally wrong?

My kids did and chose after the admitted student days. Both were well done and he was really open minded about the decision. In fact, he started the process thinking W&M suited him better but ended up choosing UVA.

My kid was going to do this, but neither one was his first choice or even near the top.

He ended up getting in ED to his #1 so he pulled the UVA EA and never submitted the W&M app (which was in progress when he got ED news). Good luck!

My 2026 OOS kid got in EA to UVA and RD (Monroe Scholar) to W&M. Not planning to attend either so won't do admitted students days.

+1. And the best statistical chances of UVa (and several other colleges) for admission are ED, EA, and the least likely is RD.

Visit all the schools in play, then decide this summer which is ED, which are EA, and which are RD.
