As a parent of a senior in the bleak no man's land of January, here is my advice: the smart, informed choice is the one you make THIS SUMMER. Pick the school you like and apply ED. It is a long freaking time from September till UVA EA comes out in mid-February, and you will be more jealous than you imagine possible of the kids who have their EDs locked up. It is much harder to get in EA to UVA than ED.
I know this is the right answer. But I have seen my kid change quite a bit from the end of sophomore year until now (midway through junior year) and I hate him having to make a firm commitment October of senior year.
Not sure if you have navigated a teen boy before, but the change between sophomore and junior year maturity-wise is pretty big generally speaking, and it's much less so between summer before and end of senior year. By December of senior year they're pretty ready to fly the coop, no matter where they go to college. The poster who mentioned UVA ED and WM EDII has a great strategy if these are the top 2 schools for your kid, given their ED admissions rate is higher by a decent margin.
