So I shoveled twice and didn't have a heart attack

It's the combination of the nature of the physical exertion and the cold weather causing blood pressure to rise. Combined with people potentially dismissing the chest pain as muscle strain from the lifting snow on the shovel.

Interesting. My Apple Watch didn’t catch any exercise/activity yesterday even though I shoveled multiple times. I’m not in great cardio shape, but regularly lift heavy weights so maybe I am conditioned enough for it?

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk but why on earth wouldn’t you shovel show over 50 if you’re in shape? If you’re someone who doesn’t work out at all, I can see it being problematic but if raising your heart rate with manual labor gives you a heart attack you’ve got bigger problems than snow on your sidewalk. Obviously the risk of coronary disease increases over the age of 50, especially in men. But again, this is why this shouldn’t be your first time exercising all year….

My young adult daughter is on the spectrum

For anyone who’s watching the TV show The Pitt, she’s a lot like Dr. King’s SN sister

She absolutely LOVES shoveling

Reminded me of when Dr. King herself got all excited about picking out 1000 pieces of gravel

I'm 54M, in fairly decent shape but have been slacking a bit this winter.

First shovel was at about 9 a.m. when CBS Sunday Morning was preempted by local coverage of the snow (Hey, TV News stations -- we have WINDOWS. We know it's snowing). Had about 8-10 inches (live in Western Loudoun). It was hard work but manageable. Took me about an hour to shovel, clear off two cars, clear off steps, etc.

Then went back out at 3:30 p.m. and there was another two inches of snow plus about three inches of ice crust. Oi vey.

I'm sore.

But, hey, I didn't keel over dead. So, yay or something.

I'll feel it tomorrow, though.

Thank God! Next time pay a neighborhood kid to shovel. Here is a reward for you from dogs in winter heaven!

So did a family member at age 50

My H is a death investigator and there is at least one heart attack -> death every snow storm and many other heart attacks not causing death.

I made my 16 year old shovel. She's still at it. I wasn't putting my 60 something year old husband out there. We need him.
