New report listing all courses offered by MS & HS

Offering Algebra 2 is not based on the cohort . It’s based on the school administration. I agree with PP as I know for sure …. my niece who was in regional CES in Cold Spring and zoned to Hoover who is a high achieving student but was not recommended for Algebra 1 in 6 th … Almost none of the kids who went to Cabin John or Hoover were recommended to take Algebra 1 from the program . But all the kids who were zoned for Frost were recommended to take Algebra irrespective of their MAP scores being similar to the other kids.

My SIL reached out to even central office and math curriculum content department all she was told was “ MCPS dont encourage acceleration beyond a norm.” But when asked about Frost , she was told that Frost school administration encourages it but not all the middle schools. And most MS have set up high criteria to enter Algebra 1 in 6 th grade. But Frost criteria for MAP -M for Algebra 1 is much lower than other MS.

"Three schools - Robert Frost, Takoma Park, and White Oak, offer Honors Algebra 2 at their school.
Students in other middle schools must attend a local high school to take that class."

well.. yes. If the cohort is large, it makes sense to offer the course in the school. Otherwise, it makes no sense to have a teacher just for like 6 kids in the class.

They don't have metrics for when to offer courses. They don't measure interest in courses they don't offer. It is all up to the principal.

+1. This is basically the takeaway from the report. Course offerings are completely up to the principals. There are cohorts at every middle school that want Algebra 2. Before the change to curriculum 2.0 in 2011 it was common for middle schools to have at least 1 class of students doing Algebra 2. This interest didn't go away, principals quit offering it.

The counselors also have a lot of power. They create the Google forms kids fill out to select courses and those often leave off certain courses or add in additional courses. The format of the Google form can also limit how many arts electives students sign up for for example. The counselors also give students Mia information or withhold information. Now they are the gatekeepers for summer school so I bet it will get worse.

Every school DOES do something different. And within one building different people will give different answers. For example, there is one MSMC where the Math RT said in an email reply about math placement that ALL 5th graders in compacted math get placed in pre-Algebra. The rising grade 6 counselor verbally told a family during the Welcome Night that all students get placed based on their grade 5 math teacher recs.

So it is different!
