REI vs The North Face vs LL Bean

Size up?

IMO Patagonia is like any other brand in that fit differs from item to item and year to year. Tops used to run short and wide and now lean toward longer and trimmer torso. They actually fit me now, but I wear a size larger there than other places for shoulder and arm comfort. DH is 5’11” and 160 with short torso, long legs. He can no longer wear their base layers; they are just too long.

This is the answer. Direct from the source or vintage.

Older Patagonia is such great quality. My teen wears DH’s fleeces, shirts, and pants from the mid - late 90s. He somehow makes them look cool again.

I miss the LL Bean store that was at the Tyson's mall. The one at Pike and Rose is so small and doesn't have much for outdoor equipment.

Just got my first Patagonia jacket and I love it.

So toasty warm and excellent pockets!

I've found the guys who were dorks in high school/college but grew up to be successful and hot LOVE women in North Face. It reminds them of all the girls that rejected them in school, back when we all wore North Face jackets, Lululemon leggings, and UGGs.

REI and The Northface technology is better than LL Bean.

REI house brand is fabulous.

The Northface makes great products. Shoes or boots run small. Their Sumit Series line can not beat. Their womens Parka is so warm and waterproof. DD used to work for The NorthFace parent company VF great perks LOL. So sad when she moved on.

LL Bean is cut differently than both of the above. Not as much as a fan. Clothing is not trendy and not made as well as it used to be.

Agreed about their sizing.

They do have good products

I used to like to shop at the LL Bean store at Tysons, I'd go about once a year and I couldn't get out of there without a bunch of new items. Now I'm getting older and don't care as much, I buy more Amazon brand clothes. Not high quality and not great style, but no hassle of leaving the house, cheap, and meets the basic need.

I buy a lot of my casual clothes from REI. Their house brand is a great value and I also have good luck with Patagonia, PrAna, and Kuhl.

Love my vintage pieces from Bean’s - wore my winter boots from the mid 90s today! - but I rarely shop there anymore. I found a cute vest there last winter, but most of their offerings are just not my speed these days.

DH and my teenage son like TNF. I find the women’s cut/ fit to be very inconsistent.

Why did they close the Tysons one? Wasn't it across the American Girl doll store once upon a time? Good location for foot traffic. Why are there soon many stairs at the p&r one?

Random spinoff… I am middle age. I occasionally run into men who I get a really awkward vibe from. Like Colin Firth in Bridget Jones and I’m convinced they seriously dislike me or I’ve done something and can’t figure out why. I do wonder if it’s the opposite and I somehow remind them of someone they used to know or like and they’re intimidated.

Are you looking for casual wear or technical athletic wear? Different answer depending on which one.
