Purdue - the easiest engineering school to get into and the hardest one to get out of. |
This is my MCPS kid -- except he is the only student at his school taking this kind of sequence. (Obvs not a "W" school, and we are low income.) I would have imagined this would have positioned him well for UMich/Wisc/GTech/UMD but now I'm nervous that none of these schools are going to care -- and since his school is pretty much unknown by these and other top engineering schools, it's not gonna go well. I guess we'll know soon enough. |
Engineering rankings: Purdue #8 Va Tech #14 ... UVA #35 |
| In at Purdue waiting on a similar subset of schools. Would be thrilled if it's Purdue in the end. |
Purdue is generally a more difficult engineering admit than Virginia Tech unless you are an Indiana resident, where the acceptance rate is around 60%. For out‑of‑state applicants, the acceptance rate is closer to 30%. Virginia Tech can be an extremely tough admit from certain high schools in Virginia, which is why Purdue can sometimes appear to be, and in some cases is, an easier engineering admit than VT. If you are applying OOS to both schools, then VT typically has a higher, and sometimes much higher, acceptance rate. VT is also test‑optional and uses weighted GPA, which likely helps some applicants. Purdue Engineering has a reputation for being one of the most rigorous engineering programs in the country. UVA and VT are strong, but generally not regarded as being as rigorous as Purdue |
UVA is also test optional and also uses weighted GPA. And it’s only ranked #35 for engineering. |
Numbers game. Percentage wise, Purdue admits more oos eng majors than VT UVA admits for in state. In state flagships are harder for in state high stats students who go to a school with a lot of other high stats students. |
https://admissions.purdue.edu/become-student/class-profile/ For 2025, College of Engineering admit rate was 34.7% - I assume this is overall since there is no breakdown by residency. 50% of all undergrads (not just engineering) are OOS. If the acceptance rate in state is 60%, OOS has to be much lower than 30% to average everything out at 34.7%. No? |
This. Competition within NOVA high schools can change the expected outcome. My niece was rejected by UVA engineering, in at Michigan engineering. |
| Essays are very important at Purdue and demonstrated interest is considered. Think our deferral was due to lack of demonstrated interest. Couldn’t attend when they came to kids school and missed the online academic info session. |

I’m trying to figure out if it is worth taking my junior to visit any of these schools during the spring/summer — if anyone can give them thoughts on whether the following kid has any shot at Wisconsin, Purdue, VT, OOS if appreciate it:
3.2 UW, but all high rigor so 4.2 weighted, from big public school. 1550 SAT. 10 APs through junior year, and let’s assume 5s on BC Calc, physics mechanics, physics c, AP chem, apush, AP lang, AP gov, and 4s on CS principles, CS Java and AP world history. Will talk MV Calc and Physics EM senior year along with an engineering elective and some humanist APs. So basically a good candidate except lots of Bs on report card. |
And this is one reason why kids apply to a lot of schools. VT uses WGPA and likes OOS, so that might be your best bet. Honestly, if you know your kid wants a BIG or ACC type school, then no reason to visit. VT doesn't track interest and my kid got into Purdue without ever stepping foot into Indiana or showing a bit of interest and I'm pretty sure his essay was bad as it was a last minute application. |
Compared with either Purdue or VT, UVa Engineering is tiny. Purdue engineering is objectively huge and either VT or UMCP are large. |
