Summer P.E

Anonymous
Hi- OP here. This comments have been really helpful! Just wanted to ask, how much do these classes cost (fcps and VV) and do the VV and fcps look different than each other on the transcript?

If anyone has taken the class, how was it for you, was it hard? Is there a summer P.E with the summer before 10th grade as well, so they don’t have to do gym at all in school? My kid is a rising 9th grader going to oakton. Please give me input. (What would be the cons and pros basically)

It’s a terrible idea and a big risk.

Why can’t kids just enjoy their summer?

It's through Virtual Virginia. DD did it last summer prior to 10th grade, and it's MUCH easier than the FCPS version in terms of the actual exercise requirement. However, it doesn't include driver education like the FCPS class so that has to be done separately. On the other hand, DS (I have b/g twins) wanted to do the FCPS class to get the drivers ed done, and he actually liked the incentive to exercise an hour per day. But, it was a lot of work, especially because he did it last summer at the same time as the Personal Econ class (which isn't hard at all but just needs some dedicated time) as well as summer theater at school.

The summer before last, they both did the FCPS class. It was a lot, but it was also a VERY hot summer, and their instructor excused the class from a lot of the workouts b/c kids couldn't workout outside, which made it easier.

My kids did the class to fit in other electives, including theater and digital art, alongside their AP classes.

virtual virginia definitely has a physical activity requirement

Well they can do summer PE and also enjoy their summer, which some kids want to do this so they can take more electives. What do you care really.

I only have experience with PE 10 but it was kind of a lot of work. An hour class every day (if you miss more than I think 2, you fail -- no excused absences) and an hour of exercise plus quite a bit of homework, at least on the days they were doing driver's ed. With the driver's ed, you go through all these modules and then have to take a bunch of quizzes and tests. If you don't sufficiently pass the quizzes and tests, the system locks you out for an hour so you go do something else but need to come back to it later. My kids has orchestra and a foreign language every year so only room for one other elective so that is why he did it. Took PE 9 in school and it was a lot easier.

My kid took it. It was harder than you might think, including the requirement to wear a monitor and keep a diary of activity that you had to vary every week. A fair number of kids fail it.

I'm pp. Yes, VV has a requirement but you can just walk and/or do lighter exercise and for a shorter amount of time. FCPS requires an hour per day, with most of it at a high heart rate.

I don't believe VV allows P/F for the summer PE course, do they? FCPS Online offers P/F.

I can't get a straight answer out of our guidance counselor, re: pass/fail or a grade. Is there any reflection on transcripts for a pass/fail over a grade? I understand a low grade can sink a GPA before the year's even begun, but I'd really like to know the pros and cons from a parents who has been through it.

I’m OP- I’m wondering this too! We have decided to enroll our kid, but not sure what impact the P/F vs grade has. If it’s an easy course, should we just take the grade?

Do you enroll directly through VV for PE10? I emailed the school counselor and didn’t get a response. I know DC will have to take drivers Ed someplace else. Are there any other options? We are looking for a course where she doesn’t need to log on daily but she doesn’t care about tracking exercise.

As for the reason, it will be nice to have the extra elective block and the PE 9 class was a pain with a hard teacher and the videos they had to make. It was not a break. Gym class should not be stressful and she is on a sports team. He just yelled at them.

My kid took it before 9th and before 10th in order to have room for two art courses. It isn’t hard but is time consuming — especially the driver’s ed portion because you are locked out from completing assignments if you miss too many questions. You are forced to wait a certain amount of hours which is tricky bc of the time they are due each day. Certainly manageable, however, a flexible time schedule might be needed.

Likewise. Could someone who has had experience with this chime in?
