Summer P.E

Anonymous
Hello, not sure if there is another recent post about this anywhere but I thought why not ask. Is it worth it to take Summer P.E? If anyone has taken the class, how was it for you, was it hard? Is there a summer P.E with the summer before 10th grade as well, so they don’t have to do gym at all in school? My kid is a rising 9th grader going to oakton. Please give me input. (What would be the cons and pros basically)

It’s for strivers. They want to load up on AP courses in place of gym during the school year. I personally like for my DS having a breather course/exercise during the school year.

Not necessarily the case. my son took it for both 9th and 10th because he wanted to take Spanish, creative writing, and his sped personal development class each year. There is no room for creative writing if he has to take PE as well.

My kids took summer PE to make room for theater and chorus.

Summer PE was not hard, but your child has to be willing to do an hour of exercise each day — enough to get their heart rate up. One child did ballet; the other did rowing/weights/stairs.

And your rising 9th grader can take PE9 this summer (before 9th grade starts) and PE10 next summer (before 10th grade starts).

Than you all! My kid will most likely be taking it for more elective choices. (Definitely not for more APs just yet since we want her to explore in the 9th grade; side note, summer P.E was her idea) Also, this may seem a stupid question, but is there a final exam for summer P.E as well? Or do you just have to log in the hours for 5-6 weeks. There’s an online part too, but is it daily or weekly?

DS took HPE 10 in the summer, best thing ever. Got himself another elective he actually enjoyed.

My DC took HPE10 in the summer to fit in a journalism class. She took it P/F so that it was low stress (it’s not difficult but was time consuming with the daily class meeting, homework, and hour of exercise on top of summer swim and a job…this way she didn’t care if she missed an assignment or didn’t quite meet a heart rate goal one day).

+1. My DD was happy to not have to do gym in school.

I want to know this too… also how many hours of work do the kids do on daily for this class? (not op)

I don't believe there is a final exam for PE9 but you do have to go in person at the end to take the CPR test. They should offer a variety of high school locations to take the test. If you do PE10, the kids have to go in person to take the classroom portion of the driver's ed test (and parents have to go to the parent presentation regardless of whether your kid does online or in-school).

You're required to be online synchronously for an hour (I think) daily with cameras on.

My child did both PEs and the personal finance online in summer not because she's a striver, but because she hates in-school PE. It worked out course-wise as she was able to take extra interesting electives and has a free period her senior year which has been great for lessening stress a bit. My other child has taken PE in-school and prefers that.

Mine did it for theater. It's not for strivers, it's to have more options for electives.

To answer OP's question, yes, it's available before 9th and 10th grades. It's quite a bit of work, simply because you have to be online at a certain time every day. I could hear DC's teacher and she was no non-sense. We signed up for the morning option so that DC would open for the rest of each day, but of course that meant she was waking up early for several weeks in the summer. If you're planning any travel, the morning option is the way to go so it doesn't interfere. There was a final in-person exam in the evening at the end and a parent has to be there for the driver's ed presentation.
