My 86 yo Dad was in the hospital for another issue and unfortunately contracted the Flu, A type. It was pretty rough there for a bit and probably extended his stay by at least a week. One trip to the ICU because his Ox level and BP crashed.
He is recovering well and is now home. No joke for sure. |

Healthy kids die of the flu every year.
A flu shot takes four seconds and it’s free. It never ceases to amaze me how many dumb people there are out there. |
Pediatricians are too kind. When an unvaxxed kid lands in the ER, the parents need to be told in no uncertain terms that their negligence is what caused their kid to be there. That the suffering (and the bills) were preventable. We play this dance with parents about how their babies are going home to Jesus as if it was inevitable and unpreventable. These people are murdering their kids. We need to treat them like people who ran over their kids with the car while drunk, not like the parents of cancer patients. |
I don’t remember getting them as a kid either but I do remember a really bad bout of flu in law school. Like missed a week of classes bad. I still never bothered with the shot until I had kids. Thanks to day care I got so many illnesses. So when the pediatrician recommended the parents get shots too, we did. And was very glad when a few years later we had flu and it was really mild compared to many others. I’ve never been in a car accident either (knock on wood!) but I never drive without a seatbelt. Why not do what you can to help yourself. |
+ people act like this is heart disease or high blood pressure or something. Even the most effective vaccine will fail if it is tested against wild virus hundreds or thousands of times. |
I don’t think flu shots were recommended for the general population until 2008 ish. So that’s why you didn’t get them as a child—they weren’t around. |
Seek help. Kids in Europe don’t routinely get flu vaccinations. |
Of course they do! You think Europeans don't post here, moron, and can't call you out on your lies? I'm French and I've always vaccinated my kids from flu. My cousins in France vaccinate against everything. Same for all the other Europeans I know from the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, etc. Who you take people for? As stupid as yourself? |
Yes, please get the shot. It WILL make a difference between a disagreeable event and serious complications. You'll be protected two weeks after your shot, which is worth it, because flu circulates until late spring. |

Thank you. And let’s look at the context too. Even the poorest European nation has better healthcare and healthier people than we have here. The antivaxxers spew garbage they don’t even understand or bother to check. Thank goodness they are doing their part to remove their genes from the pool. |
This. My youngest got sick enough to be sick in bed for a little over 24 hours, with 12 hour bookends on either side of "not feeling great". Lingering cough for a couple weeks, but up and functional within 48 hours from start. Incredibly mild case, compared to what we're seeing with others and reading about here. Nobody else in the house got sick at all. Thankful we all got our shots. Some coverage is better than none. |
Seek remedial education. It's SO easy to find better info. You could be less stupid in about 6 or 7 seconds: https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/seasonal-influenza/prevention-and-control/seasonal-influenza-vaccines |
Glad to hear that PP! |
90% of pediatric flu deaths last year were unvaccinated children. 80% of all flu deaths last year were unvaccinated people. |
