Disappointing article about Georgetown and School Spirit

Anonymous
There’s talk of building a Georgetown arena on the site where the Key Bridge Marriott was torn down. That would be amazing for students if it were that close instead of having to trek to Capitol One Arena for basketball games.

Thank god.

Yes, terrible spirit. Just terrible. Throw away those RD applications your kids are working on now.

Even if that’s true for him and his friends that doesn’t make it a school-wide vibe.

Really disappointing read. I wonder if anyone in the know can chime in on the situation at Georgetown. Are students that unhappy? I know my kid likes the idea of school spirit. They may have to consider other options, including BC and ND. Unfortunately ND was a deferral. Won't know about BC until the spring either.

And to the HC poster, yes they applied. They made it super easy with a fee waiver and no supplemental essay.

For any school, kids really only care about football and basketball…and nobody cares about non-FCS football unless it’s a place like Montana State that plays for the FBS national championship (and there isn’t anything else to really do where they are located).

Even then…schools like Stanford, UCLA and many others have terrible attendance for football games.

If Georgetown basketball can put together a decent season, then you will see stronger attendance.

I don't think any of the DC schools--other than Howard--have strong school spirit.

Back in the late neolithic age, when I was at UVa, most students cared very deeply about Lacrosse.

We attended some football and basketball games, and we had fun, but in that era UVa routinely lost most of its football or basketball games.

I doubt what you say is true. UMD has top LAX teams in the country and average game attendance of a whopping 3,000 fans.

UMD football hasn’t been good…basically ever…and averages 40,000 fans per game.

Somehow I didn't read it this way. From the article - seems to me sports is just not their top priority.

Students are politically engaged, socially conscious, and care deeply about the world around them. They show up, but not for Georgetown athletics.

They happy and care for the world a different way. If your kid is really big into sports, GU may not be the place. Their basketball is getting better but football games on campus almost always look empty. I think students want their teams to be good first then cheer them forward .. lol.

…and they are too busy dodging rats to care about school spirit.
