What's the reason behind religious leaders betraying God, church, their congregations and basic humanity?

It's more common among religious people and among any people in a position of trust.

Some of them know this -- like Donald Trump, for instance. Others are simply horny and believe that they will be forgiven.

Religion is the opiate of the masses. It's a method of control. Power corrupts.

And yes of course, these kinds of horrific crimes occur in people of all faiths. But the idea that God/Jesus always forgives... is an extremely, extremely dangerous attitude imho.

Jesus wrote a blank check!

The win condition for Christianity is to say "thank you" with your dying breath.

After having experienced the harm of “purity culture”, I believe it creates a hyper sexuality that cannot be escaped because regardless or what some religions want us to believe, we are all just human beings. Thwarting sexuality in the manner that is many times covert but also overly taught, creates a desire that cannot be satisfied. I have more to say but can come back later to do so. Look it up and the science behind it-I’ve unfortunately had to educate myself

It's always about money, power, or both. I didn't read the article, but from the headline, seems like power - they feel entitled to whatever they've done

Its simple.

Its expected to happen when you put a starving lion in charge of overseeing lambs.

Starving Lion - I like that image - it's perfect for Trump, an opportunistic Atheist with a personality disorder who is preying on Christians.

Seriously, OP? You have to ask?

They are human. Doesn’t excuse them. They should be punished severely by human society.

The rest is betw them and their god. Not my business.

Some people are born skeptics. I wasn't. I believed all that stuff til adulthood. I stopped believing in Santa Claus on schedule, but kept on believing in God.

I think it's a lot easier for people to commit evil acts when they think some higher power is authorizing then. This isn't new. There's a very long history of religion being used this way.
