YES

I’m, in fact, not the same person as the NYU poster. I haven’t even seen that thread. I imagine there are thousands of visits to this site daily. You’re bound to see similar topics. What I find weird is a grown adult feeling the need to resort to name calling, acting personally offended by a random post, and the gate-keeping of what should or can be posted here.

If you have nothing to contribute just move along and don’t keep bumping up the thread by commenting.

We can never know the truth. But it’s highly likely you’re the same person.

My, you’re persistent. With all this policing you are doing in an anonymous forum it sounds like we both need a hobby!

She got a great funded position in a research lab, loves the access to Chicago and the Evanston vibe, has found a nice cohort of students who are academic without being cutthroat, is very involved in extracurriculars. The weather can be jntense but that’s true of lots of schools (Dartmouth, Cornell, Wisconsin, Michigan etc). The classes are really hard — she has checked online exams for some of her classes from other top schools and thinks NU is harder, but I’ve heard the grad schools are aware and adjust grade expectations. The only real downside is that they run late into June so can impact summer vacations and internships. That’s also true of some other schools on quarter system.
I think it’s as talked about as schools like Dartmouth. Duke gets more play around here I think but I think that’s in part because basketball is now so popular and a lot of mid atlattic kids want warm weather.

I heard the quarter system can be intense. How many courses do students take on average per quarter?

not true for NU. Penn gets more

JHU, Penn, Duke, then Northwestern, in descending order in terms of number of DMV applicants.

Idiotic, ignorant response.

Northwestern University costs are in line with other elite private US universities[b] and NU offers generous, no-loan, 10% meets need financial aid.

Location offers easy access to either coast & to any major city in the USA.

Evanston, Illinois is an upscale suburb of Chicago. Gorgeous lakefront (Lake Michigan) setting.

Location gives access to employers on the East Coast, the West Coast, Chicago, Wash Dc,and all other major cities in the country.

Higher ranked than half of the Ivy League schools. Was sought after by the Ivy League in 1980 but curtailed discussions due to travel distances for athletic events. Travels long distances for Big Ten Conference athletics which generates substantial revenue the likes of which has never been seen in the Ivy League.

How the above poster lists Northwestern University as "not STEM" is just a clear indication of that poster's lack of knowledge about Northwestern University.

False. Northwestern is now $96-$97k a year, which puts it in the upper stratosphere of obscenely expensive colleges like USC and Colorado College.

Last year it was the hot school on DCUM.

All it takes is a few posters on DCUM to "boost" a school. Even if you don't mention your kid's school in glowing terms, but just say that's where they're going, you can get dinged if you're identified on several threads. Which happened to me (not Northwestern)

Chicago is $98,301.

That area is expensive.

NP:

4 classes. My freshman kid is already back home until early January. Has 2 papers due next week but that's it. Amazing first quarter. Likely 4.0 but maybe one A-. Humanities major.
In 2 clubs so far (one a competitive (consulting) process at start, but now it's good), rushing in January. Much more social than expected - a lot of date parties, frat events in downtown Chicago (they take coach buses down there). Goes to all home football and basketball games. Out to dinners/bars 1-2x / week and then campus event 1-2 /week. Seems very busy. In the library, a lot too.

Happy to answer questions.

Tour guide only talked about ski club, and every student we saw walking by on the tour had a scowl on their face. Even the gorgeous lake view with the sailboats couldn't convince my kid that everyone their hated their life. Our child didn't even apply after that

I just posted about my kid. We also had a similar tour guide. I was very turned off by school. By chance, DC had connected with an older kid from high school, so went to visit after the tour. DC ended up hanging with that older kid in dorm, went out that evening with the older friend from same HS. Got a very different impression about Northwestern.

Generally, the tour guides at Northwestern are very artsy - not a bad thing, but not my kid's vibe. It was helpful to see the true "diversity" of the campus.

My kid is a very happy (socially extroverted) freshman there now.

It’s very disappointing that they just gave into Trump’s mafia techniques and will pay the federal government $75M to get its federal funding back.

Demonstrated interest matters at Northwestern.

If your kid hasn't already shown any, don't bother with an RD application. Similar to Dartmouth (and Rice, WashU and Duke (lesser extent)).

Ridiculous. It's not dying. It's busiest at certain times of year.

Yes I don’t get this. I’m not the right kind of lawyer for this problem, but I was under the impression that any university who fought the Trumpers on this would eventually win unless they intentionally decided to give in like UVA.

Dumb question: how do I demonstrate interest in a university that’s half a country away when everyone knows I’m applying to ten different top universities?

With all due respect, it was Vanderbilt. 😄
