My freshman is also 2e with a persistent desire for autonomy, so basically unwilling to review anything with parents. We have had to push the school to allow them to stay in the high level courses because if the class is too easy and the homework is too boring they say they can't force themselves to do it. Smart enough for all As but getting a mix of A, B, C. Ironically the C is the supposedly "easy" class.
Has anyone gotten over these stumbling blocks? |
Is it online or in person? Can you share info? |
Hi! I found this post and we’re desperate for an EF tutor for my son. Can either of the previous posters share their info? We’d be very grateful |
This is excuse-making. Not a legitimate assessment/complaint by the kid. |
My take: He doesn’t have to review with you, but he has to review with someone – – the writing center at the school, older sibling, another teacher, a tutor. I don’t know if it’s neurodiversity or just personality but for some kids having their parents be involved is a non-starter, which is fine because parents can just be parents. But, then someone else has to fill in that gap. |
This is a good idea. I don't currently have extra $ for a tutor. It's frustrating because I used to teach and could probably be very helpful in some subjects. It's such a battle to get to look at anything. The teachers barely give feedback despite us having a line in the 504 asking for extra feedback. |

| Op - we found Catholic couldn’t addresses our kid’s ADHD. We moved her to Commonwealth Academy in Alexandria. Huge difference. Night and day. They know how to teach 2e kids. |

I’m OP and since this resurfaced, I thought I’d give an update. We hired an EF coach and DS was very resistant at first but it has helped. It’s incremental but he’s able to stay on top of things and manage larger papers and projects which is huge. He doesn’t love it, but he’ll do it, so it’s working.
Homework still seems to take a while but it’s okay. His first semester grades were good despite some major challenges (bombing some tests, work not being turned in). I think he might just be a kid who needs more time to study for tests and complete homework in general. He starts a sport again for Spring, so fingers crossed he stays on an upward trajectory. And we have to make some decisions about classes next year |
| OP again. Should add it’s not perfect but also the stress level around it is way down all around, which is great |
| So glad you came back with an update and that it’s good news! The slow and small improvements are the ones that stick and over time will add up to significant change. Hang in there! |
