World Market is a great source for food stuff if he likes to cook. Lots of small/sample sized international ingredients to try.

If he’s into sports/outdoorsy anything, hand warmers or beanie with rechargeable light.

I agree with the World Market suggestion. Just went the other day for my DS, 15. Lots of smaller, type samples food related and otherwise. One thing I found was some mints in a funny container.

Penzy's spices

Penzy’s contain toxic levels of heavy metals like arsenic and lead.

That is incorrect. Consumer Reports gave green dots (no lead) to all their spices except oregano which got a yellow dot. It’s one of the safest brands for spices.

A nice pen - you could get a decent fountain pen for that much from the german brands or a very good ballpoint for less than that, and if they're writing at school all day they'll both use and appreciate it more than most other gifts in that price range

For all the Dr squatch posters, what scent do you recommend? My son gets headaches from anything too perfumed. Are there any that just smell clean?

I always give toothbrushes, combs, but I know that's boring.

Does he use hair products? Mine likes an expensive pomade.

This feels very old school. My teen boys would not want a "nice" pen but they love Frixion pens because they are erasable. Those are good stocking stuffers.

Chocolate prices are up this year due to the effects of cocoa swollen shoot virus, lower yields from older trees that farmers aren't replacing, shrinking cocoa farm acreage from deforestation regulations and gold mining in West Africa, and a few years of extreme weather. Not to mention this administration's tariffs. Sounds like the younger generation is responding to the market.
