Are you an academic if you left the Academy? Usually we say someone “left academia” if they are consulting etc. or are you doing this on the side or on a leave of absence? Anyway, I’m a professional in academia, so kind of the opposite. |
| I worked in foreign affairs at State alongside USAID, and of course it's all changed now. Makes me sad for the future of diplomacy and development. It's also very geographic specific. Husband is an engineer and makes a great living with only a bachelors degree and can work just about anywhere. There are frustrations at times, but overall it seems like a great work life balance gig for the money. Not going to be lawyer level rich, but he is always available for the family. I work in our kids' school now, and it's a great community. Small int'l school in Europe. |

2nd career nurse. Yes if they did 2 years hospital then NP or PMHNP or Nurse Professor PhD
It is a very flexible well paid career |
| PP I am a public health nurse and make $113,000 with Sick/Annual leave/retirement etc. 40 hour week no weekends or holidays. And prior to my previous career I do actually see how my job helps re public health. |
| No. We are both research scientists who have worked in academia and currently in government. It would be irresponsible to suggest this as a career path now. |

Teacher, and not a chance. I’ve discouraged my students and my own children.
Very little respect and no work/life balance for 10 months of the year. The summer doesn’t make up for it at all. |
| Yes! I would recommend them becoming a dentist. It can definitely be quite stressful at times, especially with highly anxious patients. Overall good work-life balance and decent pay. |
| Engineer, and yes - but the landscape is rapidly changing, and who knows if it will be a good career in 10 years. |
| Not only would I not recommend it, I refuse to fund it. My kid knows better than to become a teacher though. It's hard to hide how pissed off it makes me. |
| Registered nurse here for over 20 years. After working my ass off on the inpatient unit, I finally found a nice outpatient clinic with patients who are self care. I don't have to break my back and don't work any nights shifts/no holidays, no weekends. But I would not recommend nursing to most of the people. I also have friends who are teachers and their jobs are so bad and stressful. Honestly, I don't know what profession I would recommend to my child anymore. |
| School Counselor. And definitely no. |
It’s 2025, women have more options than teaching and nursing! |
+ 1. I wish 22year old me knew what I know now; I wish I had followed this advice instead of trying to save the world. I’m a social worker and don’t recommend unfortunately. |
Glad to hear this and the PP above you; my son is a finance major. |
| Journalist - No, and no one recommended this career to me. |
