Is MAGA social media even taking this seriously, though? It seems like most people have finally realized that he's just a lying conman.

It’s like stealing someone’s car and then offering to make up for it by buying them a bus pass.

The people still buying into maga are utter and complete marks.

The tariff check should not be means tested. Higher income people paid more in tariffs because they bought more. This is just a sop to the poors so they vote MAGA.

So yet another way to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

And, your premise is probably wrong, the poor is more likely to end up buying cheaper goods from China (with tariffs) imported by Walmart etc than far more expensive domestically made goods (without tariffs).

Dumb idea, for two reasons. We haven't balanced the budget (and tariff revenue won't come close to doing so), and we know from COVID that giving people money leads to inflation.

We're going to issue a dividend to our middle income people and lower income people of about $2,000," he said. "And we're going to use the remaining tariffs to lower our debt."

While details are scant, budget experts are already saying that there just isn't enough money for this idea.

"Even with the most conservative estimates applied to it, it doesn't work," said Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the right-leaning Tax Foundation.

By her math, if the rebates went to people making under $100,000 per year, that would cost way more than the amount of revenue tariffs will bring in.

"So you'll see at least a $100 billion gap there between what we can expect the tariffs to generate for the U.S. government versus what the president is promising to spend on tariff rebates for American citizens."

She added that even if the money went out only to people making $75,000 or less annually, there still wouldn't be enough revenue, by her calculations.

This is crazy! I hope people demand their $2,000 check.

Bessent has already put the kabash to this trump lie saying that it would likely be a tax credits.

Make it means tested. The wealthy DO NOT NEED tax credits.

It would cost a half trillion dollars to give every American who is low or middle income a $2000 check.

Define wealthy. Over $100k taxable income isn't wealthy and we could use the $2000 to pay for stuff. We are in our 70s.

I'd say wealthy is Mar-A-Lago Membership wealthy. If you have enough cash lying around to pay a $1m initiation fee to become a member of Trump's cheesy country club you DO NOT need any rebates or tax breaks.

Agreed.
If they eliminated the income cap on Social Security tax it would be solvent for the future.

Trump and maga believe only wealthy people deserve tax cuts. Why should poor people get more money?
