$2,000 tariff check

Anonymous
President Trump has bragged many times about the revenue tariffs are bringing in – money paid by American businesses, who pass some of the costs on to consumers. Over the weekend, Trump pushed the idea of paying that money back to Americans, in the form of $2,000 payments

We're going to issue a dividend to our middle income people and lower income people of about $2,000," he said. "And we're going to use the remaining tariffs to lower our debt."

While details are scant, budget experts are already saying that there just isn't enough money for this idea.

"Even with the most conservative estimates applied to it, it doesn't work," said Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the right-leaning Tax Foundation.

By her math, if the rebates went to people making under $100,000 per year, that would cost way more than the amount of revenue tariffs will bring in.

"So you'll see at least a $100 billion gap there between what we can expect the tariffs to generate for the U.S. government versus what the president is promising to spend on tariff rebates for American citizens."

She added that even if the money went out only to people making $75,000 or less annually, there still wouldn't be enough revenue, by her calculations.

This is crazy! I hope people demand their $2,000 check.

Just goes to show how clueless he is, how deranged, and that Project 2025 is really running the show while letting him flap his gums.

Gee thanks, how much are tariffs costing US consumers?? Not just in the price we pay, but in loss of oversea business due to retaliatory tariffs impacting our export sales (see Port of VA) or causing trade partners to source from other countries, as well as job loss and hiring freezes.

Eff this POS President and his sh*t for the economy policies and eff you MAGAs who voted for this.

As I understand it, Trump's tariffs are all about bringing equity to international tariffs levied against the U.S. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the way they've been carried out has backfired on the U.S. Prices have gone up, inflation is up, the stock market is teetering, and the American people are angry and frustrated. They're broke.

Trump needs to understand his limits. He's too bellicose, and he's managed to offend and cause world leaders to lose face. They don't like that.

He needed to appoint someone who can charm the birds out of trees to lead this effort. This ideal individual needed to get the cooperation of world leaders in bringing equity to tariffs.

Is the $2,000 tariff check to all individuals still on the table? I doubt we qualify, but we'll see I guess.

No thanks.
It was my money to begin with! He took it to ruin our economy, by crippling industry and small businesses and farms.

It's obviously not happening. Bessent walked it back hours later by saying this $2000 could come in the form of tax cuts people are getting (e.g., no tax on tips). If anything, Trump made another promise that he's going to be forced to break.

Bessent has already said it might not be a check. It might be just the tax breaks that already exist relating to OT and tips.

+1 Also, I thought the tariff money was supposed to go to the farmers? I bet nobody gets anything, as is the plan all along. Trump dribbles out some “proposal” when people start to get mad, then… nothing.

No one is getting any checks.

Furthermore, isn’t this socialism? Shouldn’t the tariff money come back to the people who paid the tariffs in the first place? Why should my money go to someone else?

I thought it was being used to pay down the debt that has worsened horrifically under this asinine, fiscally irresponsible, administration

Bait and switch. First, he’s wildly spending our tax dollars as though he has a bottomless treasure chest. Then, when people are suffering, thanks to his policies, he holds out the possibility of hope by muttering about passing out checks — few details given. It’s not going to happen. It’s just his way of scamming people even worse. He promises, MAGA will applaud his empty promises, then something will happen or his attention will wander, and we /they will still have bills to pay.

When is Congress growing a spine and putting the brakes on Trump's excesses?

We're looking at you, cowardly bloodsucking asshats. You're busy enriching yourselves on stocks you vote on, while you look at your shoes as our democracy falters.

H1B issues. Tariff issues. Inflation. DHS disappearing American citizens because they're brown. You shut down the U.S. government until the elections were over. I could go on.

Both Democrats and Republicans.
