haha so similar. nyc private everyone is all "just relax" and "it's going to work out" and then it all happens really quickly, "need list Oct 1". I guess it's true that this can take a long time or just a few months. not sure that there's any point in spending all of high school looking at colleges, but when they say there's loads of time, there isn't. |
This student could do way better than this schools. If they want a SLAC, they would be a contender for Williams, Pomona, Amherst, Swarthmore & Bowdoin. |
OP is asking for target and safety schools. These are reaches for everyone, including students from "feeder" schools with great stats. Do many of them get in? Yes. But they are not targets. |
| MI will be a target/safety during RD |
Not with ED, it won’t. High-scoring kids could even be at a disadvantage during RD, as Michigan will doubt their likelihood to yield. |
| Why would he go to MI for humanities? Plenty of better choices. |
It wouldn't occur to me that Swarthmore, for example, would be better for the study of English Literature or history than, say, Kenyon; that Bowdoin would be better for the study of classics or philosophy than, say, Hamilton; or that Williams would be better for the study of English literature than, say, Vassar. In these cases, the latter schools may represent the stronger choices for these fields. Regarding Pomona, Claremont McKenna may be as strong or stronger for some humanities fields. |
That is not how it works. SAT score is not the sole determinant of admission. My 3.98/1560 poli sci major was not admitted to Michigan last year; waitlisted/denied. |
Similar kid. Davidson/Colgate/Wesleyan was a target. Wake used to be it’s tough now. Lots of safeties - do you want big or small? |
| Talk to other parents at your NY private high school. |
| Every application sent has a school profile attached that will explain the GPA distribution and rigor of your student's high school. They aren't comparing your kid with a 3.8 to a kid at a school with honors and AP quality points and a 4.3. They know. |
| (I don’t think colleges know. Some do, some don’t) |
Is this your NYC school? https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/1or0kra/impressive_college_matriculation_list/ |
Is there a reason you can’t wait til next semester which is, after holidays, maybe 6-8 more weeks. |
What a weird post tat is. Anyway, I know it's not Horace Mann---not enough students (or U Chicago matriculants). |
