USDA threatens businesses offering discounts to SNAP program users, but still won't pay SNAP benefits

Despite illegally refusing to fund SNAP, the Trump administration is doing "essential" work preventing business from offering their own SNAP replacement.

The info at the link above was published in February 2024 seeking comments on a proposed streamlined waiver process that would make it easier for retailers to provide SNAP incentives to choose healthier foods.

They are absolutely cruel monsters, but the conclusion you drew from reading the first paragraph at that link was wrong and you used it to spin everyone up. Lying and misleading doesn’t help at all.

How is the GOP cruel if the Biden admin is the one that put out this notice?

The GOP is cruel because they are cutting SNAP benefits despite having procedures in place to continue paying benefits during a shutdown. Are you not paying attention?

MAGA has trouble with reading and thinking. So anything they say is just FOX kool aid.

It’s also illegal for stores to incentivize one customer base over another.

This is dumb, even for maga.

Say goodbye to your senior discounts and free coffee for cops!

There is no bottom to MAGA stupidity.

LOL. I shop at stores where I don't have a preferred customer card and do not receive a discount on my purchases. Please tell me the name of the manager who can rectify this alleged illegal conduct.

Sorry, The Hill didn't cite its source properly.

The 2024 policy document is from when SNAP was funded.

Here's a article with an image of Trump USDA's notice from this week, enforcing the rule for SNAP "beneficiaries", while ILLEGALLY NOT PAYING BENEFITS.

How is it illegal for stores to incentivize one customer base over another if they aren't discriminating against protected classes?

The SNAP equality law does not apply. The store can give a discount. The store can even donate free food to a food pantry that supplies people who happen to not be receiving benefits right now and need food.

"Coupons shall be accepted for eligible foods at the same prices and on the same terms and conditions applicable to cash purchases of the same foods at the same store ...."

The stores are not accepting coupons because the individual does not have any, so this does not apply.

This is the answer. I used to work on SNAP policy. The stores cannot offer special SNAP discounts when a customer is paying with their SNAP EBT card (formerly coupons). That would be against the regs. However, if a person enrolled in SNAP wants to pay for their groceries with cash (because the Trump Admin has illegally not loaded benefits on the card) and the store wants to give that person a discount because the customer says they are on SNAP, then the store can do so.

The article says:
"After several food delivery apps and grocery store chains sought to offer discounts to those whose SNAP benefits were interrupted or delayed, the Department of Agriculture sent an email to stores across the country warning them that they weren’t allowed to offer discounts to people hurt by the cuts to the food stamp program."

That's simply is not true as written. Stores can help whoever they want if those people are not using the SNAP card. I hope stores are getting better information than what the government is emailing them.

I have a Safeway, Giant, Harris Teeter, Wegmans, joand a Walmart near me and every store has a cart for food banks and recently added another cart for furloughed Federal workers.

We all know Democrats don’t care about legalities.

We Dems have never elected a convicted felon as well as a man convicted of sexual abuse.

It’s not. The disgusting administration is hoping grocery stores will want to avoid litigation and not offer food to the poor.
