Can I wear Dr Martens in my 40s…

"taken seriously" where? Are you wearing them to argue in front of the Supreme Court? If your job is casual enough to wear Docs, no one will care what you are wearing. And if you're just wearing them out and about, again, no one cares.

What is a Delia day?

Delia's was a catalogue (and store) that was top tier in the grunge era. They still had stores in the early 2000s.

They never really were lady shoes. Girls started wearing them in the skinhead/punk music era though, and continued to be popular with women through the 2000s.
More of a man's shoe, but women still are able to wear them.

Now Birkenstocks are old cat lady Karen shoes for sure. Also "nurse's" shoes are considered old lady shoes, with the solid thick cushioned soles. Perhaps that's what you meant.

My grandma wore both doc martens and Birkenstocks in the 90s.

Must have been a regional thing. I am certified GenX, remember the first time I saw Smells Like Teen Spirit on MTV, wore Dr Maartens in the 80s like an alt goth kid and never heard of Delia’s. Of course, I got my Docs at Camden Market in London …

Unusual, as they are polar opposites in trends. Birks for the older granola crowd, docs for the skinhead metal music or grunge crowds. (In the 90s)

That is certified cool. I got mine somewhere near Brown U. I didn't have a catalog to order from either! It would have been too tempting since I was working and trying to get through college and pay for books and tuition.

I am fifty six and still wear mine.

And since they are so durable and solid I think they will last me the rest of my life.

So I plan on being buried in them.
Lol.

I love that, at 40, you still feel the need to crowd source your look.

They got bought out by a web clothing store. The brand and style is still available

I got mine at Canal Jeans in NYC, which has long closed but is still dearly missed—my DCs would have loved that place.

Anyway, I personally find them uncomfortable, but I still embrace clunky black shoes at 50-something. Go for it, OP.

Have you tried them on recently?

My 51 year old feet think they are super uncomfortable now. No clue how I wore them year-round when I was young.

I really wanted a new pair last year to wear in the fall/winter, but I quickly abandoned my plan after trying them on. So heavy, so hard, and zero support.

It’s only cool if you don’t mention it for street cred…

I have a pair of Doc Chelsea boots and they are so comfortable. I just pulled them out to wear and I am 51.
