How can you tell how rigorous/intense a school is?

Middlebury

Unsure of major, perhaps Econ

Is your kid athletic? Outdoorsy? Social?
If so, will be fine. Academics are not the issue at Midd.

Not athletic at all. Very very outdoorsy. Social in a friendly low key way but not a partier.

Is Midd a fit for this type of kid?

this is OP again adding to my PP. Not athletic in terms of no team sports or anything like that. But enjoys active things like hiking and climbing.

Middlebury can make an excellent choice for a student interested in outdoor activities:

What is the college most similar to Middlebury in the south, in the mid-Atlantic or any place south of CT?

I currently have a sophomore at Midd and would say it’s quite rigorous and the students seem to work harder than they play. It was almost 80 degrees over parents weekend and we were surprised that most kids seemed to be in the library and other study spots instead of hanging out on Battell Beach. From what we’ve heard from our kid it’s not where fun goes to die but it’s not wild either and students seem to take academics very seriously. It doesn’t seem super competitive between students except for with the finance related clubs.

Thank you for chiming in! Can you tell me more about competitiveness for the finance related clubs? He would probably be interested in those.

As an indicator for this, Davidson, for example, regards Middlebury as a peer institution:

The report I got from my student is that they don’t want to join those clubs (related to consulting and investing) because they have multiple interviews, you need to dress up, and it’s a selective and stressful process. I don’t think that’s the case with Midd clubs in general though, most things seem open to all.

Is this OP responding with the name of the school, or another poster adding a suggestion?

This is OP. I don't know who interjected JHU. That wasn't me - that's not the school I'm asking about. The school at issue is Middlebury.

Midd does not have a reputation for rigor. Don’t worry about it! But apply ED; that’s a must.

Both have a cultural emphasis on pre professionalism and economics, both are known for outdoorsy communities, and they attract a similar student.
