Fix or Buy?

I can't imagine why it costs $4k to fix an AC.

I'd fix the car.

This. What's wrong with the A/C? For 4 grand it sounds like your compressor blew up and contaminated the whole system or the evaporator is leaking and they need to pull the dash out to get to it.

I just responded at 22:05. Ours was the compressor and it's a 20-hour job.

Ouch. Yeah, replacing the compressor itself isn't all that difficult. The problem is if the compressor fails internally, it can send metal bits all throughout the system, so it'll kill a new compressor if you just swap it out and recharge the system. They end up needing to pull the components out, many of which are hard to get to, so they can adequately flush them out. It's the labor on that job that'll kill you.

If the compressor seized, either the compressor itself or the pulley that drives it, it'll lock up your serpentine belt and make the car undriveable.

I just received a letter from my Toyota dealer offering to buy my 2013 Toyota Sienna with 135k miles. I assume they want it for parts but maybe what they said is true: people want well maintained old Siennas. Crazy.

Your Toyota dealer has zero interest in selling it for parts. They need it for their used inventory. If you really want to sell it get a quote from Carmax.

Because most Americans are irrational - they will buy $60k pickup truck or $50k giant SUVs that are all gas guzzlers yet most of the time, only one person is inside. But these egocentric manuals say they feel safer and like to see from a higher position .
