The problem is if the compressor fails internally, it can send metal bits all throughout the system, so it'll kill a new compressor if you just swap it out and recharge the system. They end up needing to pull the components out, many of which are hard to get to, so they can adequately flush them out. It's the labor on that job that'll kill you. If the compressor seized, either the compressor itself or the pulley that drives it, it'll lock up your serpentine belt and make the car undriveable. [/quote]
