What is SYC EDGE?

I heard the new board members are all soccer dads.

No way this is true. You’re saying they are getting two outdoor practices and a third one is now indoor that they have to pay extra for? Why wouldn’t they just make the film and strength and conditioning night a fourth night?

It’s true.

SYC should get some credit then. What other club could pull off this type of scam in Northern Virginia? They know how to capitalize on all these thirsty Instagram parents.

How do they do it? Promise girls scholarships to Marymount and Stevenson?

my DS is older. We are down to 2-3 training sessions a week due to this scam

The additional training opportunities can be valuable for players seeking to advance into more competitive leagues or teams.

But there are concerns about whether this arrangement aligns with the requirements for the club’s top MLS Next Homegrown Division team. According to the MLS Next Homegrown Division Technical Standards for the 2025–2026 season:

- U13–U14: Clubs must provide a minimum of three training sessions per week.
- U15 and above: Clubs must provide a minimum of four training sessions per week.

In practice, however, this standard may not be met. For example, training sessions on Mondays are frequently canceled for the older age groups, leaving players with only three sessions. The Tuesday EDGE program is "mandatory" and requires an additional fee - many players choose not to participate given the additional cost. As a result, players at the older age groups are often limited to only two—at most three—sessions per week.

This raises questions about whether the current structure satisfies the league’s technical requirements.

Exactly. Except it doesn't raise questions, it does not satisfy the MLS Next requirements. SYC signed an agreement with MLS Next as a part of becoming a member club agreeing to abide by the standards, etc.

If you're at an MLS Next club and know of an infraction, report it here:

Why are the Monday practices canceled? My kid practices on Mondays for another club and they aren' ever canceled.

Coach feels team needing Monday off to rest from double header weekend, or game on Sunday. Probably the coach needing rest due to coaching other age groups/teams.

I hear that the parents whose kids don't play a lot on the weekend are very adamant about Monday practices after a double header weekend, but the starters probably need to take a rest after that level of exertion. the worst thing that can happen to these athletes is to get permanently injured. Seems like a logical risk mitigation to me.

WTF?!?

SYC younger age groups are dominant. I can’t believe they are wasting talent like this with this behavior. We NEVER miss Monday practice. NEVER!

taking a rest day is good. what SYC is doing is taking away a training session parents have already paid for

Then they shouldn't put the older teams on a regular Monday practice. They should do tues-fri

So is it true that instead of 3 field practices per week, the club at the u14 - u16 level is 2 field practices and 1 Edge session? It’s not clear fr this. TY.
