Why do you only interview women? That is very odd. |
| Students at top Southern privates may have an easier time getting into Duke. |
Most (all?) schools match interviewers and candidates by gender. I had g/b twins who interviewed for about 10 top10 schools each and they always had same-gender interviewers. |
agree. |
duke does not do that as a policy. it is not ever mentioned and i interview all genders for duke every year, always have. |
| Are his ECs at a national or international level? |
Agree. This matters at T10. |
This is true at our public HS also - most the SAT's of accepted students are well below the 25% percentile. High school average also low. |
Same with me (I'm the person who originally asked the question). I am pretty much 50/50. If it got out that they matched by gender that would look really horrible. That is why I am very skeptical about the poster. If they interview as much as they claim to, there is no way they would only have one gender. |

In the past three years, there were two unhooked Duke acceptances from our public school, which is not in the DC area. We know them both well. Their stays were 1550+ and 3.9/4.0 with 12 AP classes, including BC their junior year. One was ED and one was RD.
There were also two hooked acceptances during those three years. Not sure about their stats. The Naviance stats aren’t complete. |
| If this 1490 student was the top student in his/her class (or one of top 1%), student body or class president and captain of major winning sports team, and their score is more than 300 points above school average, should this applicant submit 1490 to Duke or go test optional? And does the answer change if ED vs. RD? |
I have been an alumni interviewer for Duke for 17 years, and I can tell you they do not parse by gender. |
submit. class president + captain counts for a lot imo |
|
My kid applied Duke ED last year and did not get in. 1510 SAT, #1 in his class, 13 APs (5s, 2 4s), ECs and relevant internship experience.
Go ahead and shoot your shot, but be realistic - it's just so competitive. Most applicants will have higher stats. Most will be superstars. But they have to say yes to someone right? |
In that case, I'd look at the Naviance data. Has Duke accepted any one from your school in the past? What are their stats? That seems to be the most reliable data. If Duke hasn't taken any one from your school recently, I'd ED to be on the safe side. |
