It is a good predictor from ours. Not a single unhooked Duke admit under 1550 in 5 years. Plenty of 1550+ that did not get in. But 1550 seems to be the threshold AT OUR SCHOOL for the unhooked who are admitted ED or RD. No one knows what OP's school wants. |
DP: I'm skeptical. A private, presumably with privileged kids, is getting unhooked applicants into Duke unless they have 1500+ (preferably above 1550) and are in the top 1-2% of the class. Real standouts. If the kid has a hook, that's a different story. |
From another alumni interviewer: how do you know? We do not see grades or test scores and are very specifically told not to ask. So either you are lying or you are violating the rules but requesting that information. And I doubt you interview enough kids to have a statistically significant data set to make such a definitive statement (I learned about that in Stats 110 back in the day). |
| Duke has been Ivy level for decades who are you kidding. Look back at US News rankings, it only lags HYP. |
|
NYC surburban public high
Brown, 1560 lowest Duke 1500 lowest GPA spreads over a range A- to A, all high rigor. Cornell 1450 but in-state + contract college |
| Wish Duke put a limit on Northeast privates. Duke was unique when it didn’t draw from likes of Brown, Penn etc. |
| Agree with others that your school's Naviance data is the best predictor. Having said that Duke's own recently retired Dean of Admissions said publicly they like to see ED. Shoot your shot |
|
Duke is a college that has clear feeder schools and non feeder schools. At our private you can almost 100% count on getting into HYP if you're top5 but you can't get into Duke if you're the valedictorian with 1600 and are curing cancer in your basement. They just don't admit our kids.
You need to know where your high school stands. |
But don't you think that is because kids pick HYP over Duke (other than Dartmouth and Cornell, Duke loses yield to Ivies)? Do kids ED to Duke and still get rejected? |
|
ED very possible from our private at 1500 plus
RD is basically impossible for all |
Yes-they ED and are rejected even with top stats. it's weird |
I interview 5 young women in each round, sometimes more. I do not see their files but I absolutely learn about their accomplishments, including NMF. More importantly, these students typically have incredible credentials and super rigorous academics. I’ve seen 3 get in over the last 5 years. The head of my region shares the stats for my area so I know just how few are getting in. This student’s profile is not in alignment with those that are admitted based on my experience. The published stats for admitted students support my beliefs. I would not recommend wasting an ED shot, but it’s certainly his right. |
That depends on your region. You can't generalize. |
Sure but this is a DC forum, not sure Nebraska region matters . . . |
Exactly. You were replying (with way too much self-confidence) to a post about stats and saying they weren’t good enough. Each region and school and situation is different. And it is constantly evolving. I have interviewed 2-3 candidates a year for 20 years. Since I don’t know grades and scores I can’t even begin to guess who will get in and I would never be presumptuous enough to try to gauge anyone’s odds unless they were awful. But based on what they tell me and my opinions, it is completely unpredictable, except for some applicants who very clearly had no chance. |
