XC group classifications

Could we please keep negativity about individual coaches and athletes out of this thread?

It’s a breath of fresh air otherwise.

The top girls teams in the DC area from last year based on best times in hypothetical race would have been as follows:

West Springfield, VA - Team Time (1st 5) 1:30:27.0
James Robinson, VA - Team Time (1st 5) 1:30:27.1
Georgetown Visitation Prep, DC - Team Time (1st 5) 1:33:21.0
Bethesda-Chevy Chase, MD - Team Time (1st 5) 1:34:45.7
W T Woodson, VA - Team Time (1st 5) 1:34:53.6

Of course many of the teams have graduated good senior runners that have been replaced, but this list is probably a pretty good starting point.

Langley has a freshman who had an impressive time in the Varsity race.

Big deal

It is a big deal. The last several years there have been freshman who have shaken up the rankings. Running is one of those sports that kids can start freshman year of HS and dominate. Usually they have been good athletes in other sports and come into it freshman year and dominate. It is nice to see the freshman arrive

Yes!

This is part of the fun of cross-country. If a team has some depth, the coach may choose to experiment with factors like this.

Another thing my kid's old coach did is that he would sometimes encourage the top couple of kids to hold back so that they could practice running as a pack. In a big race, a team that can lock up places 9-14 may be more likely to win than the school who has the winner, if the rest of the team is much farther back. Or if the leaders are dispersed among many schools.

MY FAVORITE SPORT!

From a freshman parent, thanks for this.

Monroe Parker was the first meet I’ve ever seen, and I have no idea what the deal is, so this is interesting to me.

Thankfully, my kid is mostly in it for the fun of it, so it doesn’t feel stressful. We can just show up and learn. Kids put forth a lot of effort but really looked like they were enjoying themselves.

Freshman parent here as well - was very impressed with the atmosphere and camaraderie. The bussing situation for parents was atrocious, though. Will plan differently next year.

In past years the busses have been great but this year they were non-existent at best. FCPS budget cuts? We ended up taking an Uber from West Springfield and still barely made it for the start of race.

I spoke with another mom on the bus (after waiting 40 minutes in the blazing sun). She said in past years that there was a church closer to Burke Lake that allowed parking and more busses than this year, but they declined this year because parents/families parking there left a lot of trash behind and they had trouble cleaning it up before services the next day. You reap what you sow.

Most freshman who "dominate" are not new to running freshman year. Yes, it's true a good athlete can show up freshman year with no running experience and do well just because they are good everything, but it takes some time and effort to get really fast.

True. However coaches at HS are noticing that incoming freshmen are stronger runners due to XC now being available at the MS level. I have to think that is helping.

These blogs are the equalizer to bad coaches that go unchecked. Sorry not sorry. I am assuming you are a low end coach lurking around to see what people think of you.

FCPS has some bad bad coaches across sports and even worse athletic directors who do nothing about it. I am glad parents are calling it out

The DyeStat Southeast regional early season rankings came out today and the following local teams are included:

Robinson - #3
West Springfield - #5
Woodson - Watchlist

I’m the parent upthread who asked to leave negativity about specific coaches and runners out of this thread and I stand by my opinion. Take it elsewhere.

Stop policing speech Karen. It’s a public thread.
