XC group classifications

I was once again impressed with the girls in Fairfax County. There are some top runners across several high schools that did really well at that race- and it was humid and warm. Burke Lake is a tough course.

There seems to be more interest in girls XC than I would have expected. There was a NOVA thread that fizzled out, but perhaps a broader DC-area thread would get more eyeballs?

And congrats to the Yorktown sophomore in her debut race for getting first place and beating some of the best runners in the state.

Yes!

This is part of the fun of cross-country. If a team has some depth, the coach may choose to experiment with factors like this.

Another thing my kid's old coach did is that he would sometimes encourage the top couple of kids to hold back so that they could practice running as a pack. In a big race, a team that can lock up places 9-14 may be more likely to win than the school who has the winner, if the rest of the team is much farther back. Or if the leaders are dispersed among many schools.

MY FAVORITE SPORT!

From a freshman parent, thanks for this.

Monroe Parker was the first meet I’ve ever seen, and I have no idea what the deal is, so this is interesting to me.

Thankfully, my kid is mostly in it for the fun of it, so it doesn’t feel stressful. We can just show up and learn. Kids put forth a lot of effort but really looked like they were enjoying themselves.

Freshman parent here as well - was very impressed with the atmosphere and camaraderie. The bussing situation for parents was atrocious, though. Will plan differently next year.

Does anyone know why South Lakes HS wasn't participating in this meet? They have a handful of state and national champs. It would have been fun to see how they line up with Robinson and Yorktown.

South Lakes tends to run in different meets but they will race against Lake Braddock/Robinson/Woodson/West Springfield at the Oatlands Invitational at end of month and then at the State meet

South Lakes does well in XC but does REALLY well in track (that is where their state champs and national relay team is from)

In past years the busses have been great but this year they were non-existent at best. FCPS budget cuts? We ended up taking an Uber from West Springfield and still barely made it for the start of race.

I would appreciate it if someone would list and rank the top girls teams in the area. I think Milesplit may have rankings behind a paywall but I don't have access. Thank you!
