They get the field permits for free, the coaches are volunteers, they have sponsors for the shirts, and they give the coaches almost no equipment (two balls, six pinnies and a basic first aid kit). Maybe $5/kid for all that?

Refs are $30 a game (no ARs) with 8 games and, say, an average of 24 kids across both teams per game for the first four years - that's $240 per season, so $10 per kid for the whole season to pay the refs for U9-U12.

So the remainder ($175/kid) goes almost completely to administration, i.e., the salaries of the people who don't respond to emails.

This is not unique to VYS. I have been a rec coach across three local clubs over 10 years. They all ebb and flow - a club will be good for a few years, then someone good leaves and they are dysfunctional again. But in all cases, the vast majority of the money is going to admin salaries.

Here is a list of other expenses that any good neutral would also have (most expensive to least)
- goals/field equipment/paint
- insurance
- USYS rec player memberships(11.24/ rec player)
- background checks (up to $140/coach for international background checks)
- soccer balls/cones/pinnies
- website hosting
- processing fees
- scholarships/refunds

And I’m probably still missing several. $190 is an awesome deal for supervised instruction of any sort. If you break it down hourly, it’s probably a fair price just for the first week.
