what are the fees for rec soccer? It’s cute to hear people complain about something that costs $190 to register for.
I mean, yes, this is peanuts compared to travel sports. But where does the $190 go? They get the field permits for free, the coaches are volunteers, they have sponsors for the shirts, and they give the coaches almost no equipment (two balls, six pinnies and a basic first aid kit). Maybe $5/kid for all that? Refs are $30 a game (no ARs) with 8 games and, say, an average of 24 kids across both teams per game for the first four years - that's $240 per season, so $10 per kid for the whole season to pay the refs for U9-U12. So the remainder ($175/kid) goes almost completely to administration, i.e., the salaries of the people who don't respond to emails. This is not unique to VYS. I have been a rec coach across three local clubs over 10 years. They all ebb and flow - a club will be good for a few years, then someone good leaves and they are dysfunctional again. But in all cases, the vast majority of the money is going to admin salaries.
Here is a list of other expenses that any good neutral would also have (most expensive to least) - goals/field equipment/paint - insurance - USYS rec player memberships(11.24/ rec player) - background checks (up to $140/coach for international background checks) - soccer balls/cones/pinnies - website hosting - processing fees - scholarships/refunds And I’m probably still missing several. $190 is an awesome deal for supervised instruction of any sort. If you break it down hourly, it’s probably a fair price just for the first week.
