"Closing time, time for you to go out
To the places you will be from"

Ugh, this song was so trivial and unimportant.

Yeah, I was going to say “This is the time” but think “don’t you forget about me” takes me back instantly

“Slack Motherf—ker” by Superchunk

I think this is likely the correct answer.

That said, I was never a Nirvana or grunge fan, which makes me feel like I lean more X-ennial (I am a 77 baby).

I also didn’t really relate to Reality Bites.

Came here to say this. Correct.

+1 It also consistently makes the list of "WORST songs" so I guess it's pretty definitive in that way.

NOT that completely inane song, Mr. Jones.

Most of Gen X was out of college when this song came out. Not a good choice.

I’m Black and don’t even know the songs OP listed as “definitive” so please do not try to speak for a generation

That came out in '81, so really, it's a boomer generation song. I was 11 when that song came out.

Simple Minds, R.E.M., all boomers. Totally agree that they shaped part of our childhood, but I also think you have to give credit for actual Gen X making music.

Dave Grohl is late 50s but still a bona fide Gen Xer. Same with White Stripes.

Just had to point that out. I think pop culture got really exciting for me when it was actually my generation putting out stuff.

That's common though. The Beatles are all Silent Generation, but they undeniably music for Boomers. I'm an older millennial and most of the music that was influential for me growing up was made by Gen Xers, because they were old enough to be selling albums when I was in high school.

+1 It's about what song defined that generation, not when the band members were born.

I do think "Don't you forget about me" is iconic 80s, and the title definitely defines gen x in our society.
