+1. They look for second-tier students who are likely to yield, because nobody in their right mind would pay that tuition for an oos public.

I agree. The price is too high. Certainly engineering students have far better options.

Michigan, UCLA and Berkeley are just as expensive if not more so.

True. And much bigger.

At least one AP in each of the five main subject areas.

I know numerous former and current UVA oos and in-state student and NONE are second-tier students, even those in engineering. All impressive so you can stop now.

Common app reopened tonight and UVA doesn’t have any supplemental essays! DeanJ also didn’t do her normal 3pm instagram live today. Do you think they’ll add essays tomorrow? That always seemed important for their holistic review

I’m on the west coast. The kids I know going to UVA OOS are all at private schools. They’re applying ED.

They meet 100% need for OOS too.

With privately hired college counselors, writers, editors and AI it’s surprising essays/supplementals are still required by any college.

Plus second language proficiency.

"We are deeply interested in students who show kindness, care, and compassion to others and demonstrate character and integrity in all they do."

This is another top school explicitly focused on kindness (Dartmouth and Yale are two others).....

Interesting. I have degrees from Dartmouth (professional school) and Yale and some of my best friends went to UVA. The people I know from the 3 schools are all very similar and I know multiple admissions officers who have 2/3 of those schools on their resume.

I have 2/3 of these schools of my resume too and am married to someone from one of them to boot.

What really? no supplementals? That's a big change if it is one. Would it always post on August 1?

My kid will be happy if they don't have them...

Yup. They are only second tier in the sense that some of them were striving for Ivies and didn't get in. But these are kids who I thought were Ivy material, were just like my Ivy classmates back in the day.
