Exciting? Cleveland? I guess if the comparison is Ithaca, but I'd much rather be in such a beautiful place fall and spring.

NP. Have you been there? Cleveland is a very underrated city. There are tons of parks, access to the Lake (beaches/boating/sailing), lots of arts and culture, professional sports teams, and world-class health care. Case is in a good location too.

Yes, I've been. Very nice art museum, lake surprisingly meh, pretty flat and unattractive city with little going on when we visited. Merit plus pre-med opportunities are certainly pluses though.

Case Western won't give you the traditional college experience, but it is decent for what it is. Close proximity to hospitals make it ideal for premed majors getting experience.

Evanston or Cleveland, a lot kids would be happy to attend with tons of free money. I don't understand what are a bunch of snowflakes are complaining about here. Stop, just stop!

Yes but they also play admissions games with "demonstrated interest". A high stats student is likely to be waitlisted then put through a strange process where you have to check-in every week. CWRU is known for this.

Generally even with merit, CWRU is likely to be more expensive than state flagship.

That is if you have a strong flagship like UVA, which is also decent for premed. When your state flagship sucks, or is not friendly to premed, then CWRU makes sense and is the way to go.

Very little diversity in restaurants, very little fresh food. He hates how small the student body is - dated a girl for a month, broke up, next semester she's a TA in one of his classes.

There is very little diversity there.
”there” meaning?

The school itself is over 60% minority. That not diverse enough for you?

What? This is not a true statement at all. There a fraternities, sororities, dorms, club sports, D3 sports, other clubs, dorms. What makes it non-traditional?

C'mon now. No legit major sports programs (D3) which results in a not so great school spirit etc. But, that's not why you go there. I get it. The best comparison would be a school like Northeastern. Not for everybody.

No offense to CWRU, but heck no. Not even close. It is a very good school. But it is not a peer of those. Based on the few kids I know who applied, they hand out aid like candy, but even that tends to be to kids who didn't get into Ivies. There might be some overlap in applicants with those schools but unless money or something else is coming into place, no one is choosing Case over them.

Nice, smart kids. Very good engineering. Not the ideal place to go to school but could be a lot worse as it is near a big city with sports, concerts, airport, etc and driveable from the east coast.

For premed there is a lot of overlap. They give full ride to top kids, many 1550+ premed chose full ride merit over the above referenced peer schools.

Wasn't aware they give full rides. Most I've seen is $40-45k off $92k COA.

+1. I don't think they do.

No! Lol

Back in the day, northeastern was an evening school for working adults, that school spirit lasts until this day. CWRU was an academic powerhouse—still is. But if you look for a rah rah school, CWRU might not be the best fit.

I have a rising sophomore at Case who had a great freshman year. Made lots of friends, got involved in various clubs and activities, enjoyed the city, and loved his classes. I think Cleveland is a great city— he went to Guardians and Cavs games, spent a weekend at a house on the lakefront, went to the art museum, ate great Italian and Eastern European food, etc.
And he received a nice amount of merit aid that made the cost much lower than the list price.

I hear about CWRU primarily from families with pre-med students. How would a non-premed, non-STEM student, humanities boy find the campus vibe? We are looking for target schools that aren't soul crushing in terms of an academic grind. Thanks for any first-hand info!

There are plenty of kids who are not pre med should be able to find a few to get along with

You are both very wrong.
CWR is like a back up option to schools like Tufts, BU, BC, or Northeastern.

Northeastern has D1 hockey team and the school spirit around that is very good.
There are plenty of diverse campus activities for everyone including Greek life if you choose that.
Everything for everyone not to mention all the thing the City can offer, that's the good thing about Northeastern.

Nice campus, close enough but not in the city, good communication from advisors already, connected on social media with a number of other incoming freshman. Good merit helped too. When I was there on a visit I saw plenty of diversity and realized I underestimated Cleveland. Plus, Little Italy is close to campus from some great food!

I would say it is in the city.

Tufts and NEU are not the same. The former is a much better school.

My kid goes to neither but applied to both and accepted to both.

Tufts is no better than Case in general and is not competitive with NEU or Case for engineering.
