My CWRU rising senior has found that the campus location between 3 major health systems (including The Cleveland Clinic) has been incredible for accessing resources and racking up shadowing hours. He will be applying to med school next year and has had a much easier time fulfilling the needed clinical requisites in Cleveland than his pre-med friends elsewhere. |
How can anyone be bored on a college campus? No other time in one's life will there be a greater concentration of opportunities, events and peers all in one place regardless of the particular school. That is one of the great things about the college years. |
There is very little diversity there. |
We actually liked the location and thought the campus was nice. Ultimately the school was a bit nerdy for my kid, but that might be alright. My kid also withdrew his application after getting deferred from EA with an offer of admission if he switched to ED2. |
Exciting? Cleveland? I guess if the comparison is Ithaca, but I'd much rather be in such a beautiful place fall and spring. |
My son has not found this to be true. Way more diversity than his DMV public high school. We are a minority family, btw. |
Look, they give generous merit, almost automatic if you have high stats. At a time like this, a lot of families are struggling with tuitions. Evanston or Cleveland, a lot kids would be happy to attend with tons of free money. I don't understand what are a bunch of snowflakes are complaining about here. Stop, just stop! |
+1 NP. My student at Case Western has found the school to be highly diverse. In fact, as a white student she is often far in the minority in her classes and in the clubs she participates. We know this as she has commented many times to us how she loves that aspect of Case. |
Well, an athlete has built-in friends in their teammates and is busy with sports practice and games and such. Not a lot of free time. So a non-athlete has to work harder to make friends and has more free time to fill. |
Yes but they also play admissions games with "demonstrated interest". A high stats student is likely to be waitlisted then put through a strange process where you have to check-in every week. CWRU is known for this. Generally even with merit, CWRU is likely to be more expensive than state flagship. |
NP. Have you been there? Cleveland is a very underrated city. There are tons of parks, access to the Lake (beaches/boating/sailing), lots of arts and culture, professional sports teams, and world-class health care. Case is in a good location too. |
Young people don't go to the opera. That recognition could happen anywhere that has opera and long-time ushers. Severance Hall has cute short family concerts for little kids to introduce them to instruments. A Cleveland Symphony player will talk about their instrument, their journey to being a professional musician, and demonstrate a few pieces. If your son had friends that aren't into classical music, these might be painless intros. They are light and fun. Of course you have to like kids, but when I was a college student at a rural campus, I actually missed being around a variety of people including kids. Also the Cleveland Art Museum and local historical society have interesting exhibits and things to do. For those that are concerned about diversity, CWRU is an urban school. Regardless of the makeup of the student body, there are community opportunities throughout the city. There are a lot of ethnic communities in Cleveland. I agree with the others who say you have to make your own fun. My kid is at a different college with wonderful extracurricular amenities. It's a big school so there are also plenty of people to meet. But what my son does for fun with friends are pretty basic things like light hiking, canoeing, eating out, and going to movies. The Cleveland area has a very nice Metroparks system with ranger talks, nature centers, festivals, voyageur canoe tours, etc. You would probably need a car driver to do those but some might be on public bus users. It sounds like Case just isn't a great fit socially. I was a transfer student from one state flagship to another. So I understand this. But there's definitely more that could be done to make Cleveland more fun. |
^ public bus routes. |
Mine is not there yet but is starting in August. She is excited. Nice campus, close enough but not in the city, good communication from advisors already, connected on social media with a number of other incoming freshman. Good merit helped too. When I was there on a visit I saw plenty of diversity and realized I underestimated Cleveland. Plus, Little Italy is close to campus from some great food! |
Yes, I've been. Very nice art museum, lake surprisingly meh, pretty flat and unattractive city with little going on when we visited. Merit plus pre-med opportunities are certainly pluses though. |
