Would you move to nyc for 200k more in salary?

I mean, what’s left of this raise after factoring in taxes, cost of living, etc. There is nothing special about NYC—maybe there was 40 years ago.

So I wouldn’t do it unless there was a reasonable commute from westchester or NJ. Some people even commute in from dutchess county on metronorth (like beacon where the houses are still pretty afffprdable).
I think it would also depend on whether you e got a house here that you bought when interest rates were low and are in a decent school district If you have that, and are living comfortably at 260k, I’d be reluctant to give that up. If you have to pay private school in NY, that 200K difference (closer to 100K after taxes) will disappear fast. (Although if you are catholic there are some decent Catholic HS options that are cheaper).

OP makes 460k, affordability is not an issue. She can do Larchmont + public school that’s 30 min on the train, or new Rochelle + private.

Similar job but different company offering me 460k salary but I would have to move to nyc

Bonuses are 100k-200k. 100k here. 200k possibly nyc but bonuses are never guaranteed.

Should I consider moving there? Middle and high school age kids here.

You had me at middle and high school kids. If they are happy and well-adjusted, I wouldn't leave. I would even commute it if the money was really needed over moving the family.

I'm seriously a loser and failed my life. I make $105k at 48 and someone is debating whether to move for $200k+ extra.

You likely were able to afford the life you want at 105k. I am super insecure about money. I mean I would move to mars for another 200k 😂

That's true. My only debt is my mortgage. My kids don't have a crazy 529 but each have $60k on it and are respectively 4 years and 7 years away from college. I drive a basic Mazda 3. I go for free trips like hiking etc. I cook at home. So you are correct. I have a basic life I am happy with.

No and I'm from NYC.

What’s the point of living in New Rochelle and paying for a private school?

If you are going to suffer the commute then live in Bronxville, Scarsdale, etc. and go public.

Bc many my successful colleagues (MD of trading) live there? How bad can it be?
Some of them even live out there in Katonah.
Scarsdale has small lots and feel crowded, with recent influx of tiger parents. I didn't choose Scarsdale for this reason.

If your kids are happy, absolutely not. I would try to negotiate 3x a week in office and get an efficiency and commute via train. I would do that for 200k. Assume efficiency in nyc is 2k and train an additional 1k. Leave early Tuesday and come back Thursday night.

OP can’t afford private schools.

Plenty of GS12 couples send their kids to private schools.

200k is not enough
not enough to move

I'd focus entirely on the wellbeing of the kids. $460,000 isn't all that much in NYC. It's fine if you are single, but you will find that challenging as a family.

Do you want to move? I love NYC and I would move back for a job that I really wanted. I would have raised my kids in Manhattan if we had found jobs there after college.

460k is a decent wage to raise high schoolers and decide what you want to do next.
