The quality of the dorms varies widely. Mather is terrible - high rise heat trap with no ac; rats and mice.

Most New England dorms don't have a/c. My Harvard freshman dorm, Lionel, was small but very nice.

Hollis had big doubles. Huge! Hated the roommate but loved the room.

Harvard’s MAC athletic center was still not air conditioned as of last summer. It was so hot during a heat wave when DC was there for a sports camp. Surely, MIT gyms must have AC even though also in New England?

Sound like most places in the 80s.

Eh, when you're 18 yrs old dumpy dorms aren't as repulsive as when you're an onlooking 47+ yr old parent .

The 18- 25yr old age range have low thresholds for the most part - youth hostels, "backpacking across Europe", and all the other "roughing" it experiences...

Dorm envy and luxury are out of control.

College students should live in squalor -- safe and clean, of course -- but dumpy.

DC attends boarding school and is totally fine with dumps or slovenly roommates. Draws the line at the idea of a triple.

There are plenty of old dorms in the NE, upside is the rooms tend to be bigger. One of mine is at Brown. Definitely varies considerably, they have everything from homes to old unfortunate dorms to two brand new dorms donated by generous Harvard/Brown alums. My kid got on one of them, 2 and 4 person singles with common area, 3 very nice kitchens per door and nice study spaces. I think they are updating some older soon if I’m remembering correctly.

Another kid at a school ranked for best dorms on many lists and ironically I don’t like it. Very new and brown and zero character.

I do when they are health hazards - mold, rats, etc.

Part of the experience at several UC campuses, along with fighting for classes and resources. I guess people accept it as a rite of passage, but I would have trouble paying OOS tuition for it.
