If you want to see examples of my experience at The Heights, check out the DCUM threads I linked to here:
https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1282020.page I’ve been living with PTSD for the past 15 years. If you want, I may be able to link to some redacted evidence of the abuse. |
I question whether celebrating Pride Month is mainstream. Accepting gay people has become mainstream, thankfully, but the political messaging of the rainbow flag and the parades is pretty far to the left. All of the gay people who I know would not go near the parades. |
I don't know much about the Heights, other than it is more formal. I looked at a summer camp for my son and there was a dress code of golf shorts/polos everyday. If you want a more inclusive/liberal school, then look at St. Andrew's, which is close to Heights. |
That is a truly terrible thing to post on so many levels. |
We are a little more conservative than OP, and decided against the Heights and to stay at our parochial school through 8th. I highly recommend attending both the fall and winter open houses (totally different), and possibly signing your kid up for the more religious camps they offer in summer (there’s a sports and saints camp where they pray the rosary daily in August I think), that would probably give you a better feel.
As far as the comments about the matriculations, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with U of Maryland and I’d love to send my boys to Franciscan… |
no kidding. geez. |
Biola is not a conservative Catholic college, not even close. It is a popular, evangelical protestant college that could be described as conservative. Biola was founded as the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. Niche ranks them among the top 10 Christian colleges in the U.S. |
I think you still consider it. I think a lot of the posters on here are extremely judgmental and don’t have a true understanding of Catholics or who attends The Heights.
You sound like a good family. |
You are a peach |
NP. What's funny to me is, one of the universities mentioned was good enough for Catholic literal royalty. Not everyone's college priorities are the same, and graduates of Catholic schools in particular might not be looking for the same "prestige" focused list many parents on DCUM seem intent about. |

I doubt that your average family celebrates Pride Month. It’s not as mainstream as Christmas (religious or secular observance) for example. Some families may attend Pride festivities if they happen to be nearby but that’s probably it. |
Have we seriously gone a full three pages without mention of the lack of school nurse? |
That’s in the other Heights thread. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1282020.page |
If you are thinking about The Heights it probably is worth the time to familiarize yourself with Opus Dei. The status of the group is in flux within the Catholic church and the persecution complex that some members and supporters are quick to adopt is likely to be augmented over the next few years with further erosion of the independence they once enjoyed. It may be that this has minimal impact on the institutions affiliated with Opus Dei but it never hurts to walk into circumstances eyes wide open.
