This doesn't seem to be a problem here. And it won't stop students from getting weapons into school. It's pointless. |
Are kids doing that again? |
it's the same technology. |
Tell me you don't work in a school without telling me that you don't work in a school. Staff have to swipe their badges to get into the building, and the door unlocks for such a short time that we even struggle to get the door open before it relocks. It also SLAMS shut right behind us, which can be a problem for staff with physical disabilities. Additionally, we are not allowed to open or hold the door for anyone unless we see an FCPS badge and we direct them to the main office immediately. |
Someone can still get into the building with a weapon or to stash a weapon to use later literally at any time outside the "student arrival staffed time". The buildings are literally open to anyone during community use, for example. During the school day and after school, kids come and go all day via unlocked doors. This is making kids go through a huge hassle every morning and be late to class for absolutely no value. |
| If they aren't staffing those detectors at every entrance from staff arrival until the end of community use and for every sports or community event, then they serve no point and are just theater. |
|
And someone can slip entirely past TSA security and fly without an ID or boarding pass, and the security adds delays to getting to a person's gate, but I don't see anyone arguing to eliminate airport security because it doesn't work.
Yes, weapon detectors at schools stinks. Yes, there can be ways around it. Yes, someone can stand outside any building and shoot their way in. But until this country figures out how to stop school shootings, school systems are going to take steps to deter them as best they can. Believe it or not, they actually want to protect the children and teachers inside the school buildings. This thread has provided no suggested alternatives; only complaints. Unless one has a better way to keep kids safe, complaining about things doesn't add anything to the conversation. Want to talk meaningful gun legislation or changing the massive gun culture of this country? That would be a good place to start. |
Umm, lots of people suggest removing TSA security theater. They miss weapons all the time. Also, comparing a much more secure airport to a school is just wrong. This isn't a problem here, and you're ignoring all the problems this creates. Metal detectors don't stop anyone from shooting their way in, but they do create new high visibility targets. This solves a non existent problem, and creates new ones while wasting funds the school says it doesn't have. |
School shootings in America is a "non existent problem" I really would like to live in your fantasy land. |
I’m guessing you don’t work in a high school. The doors are open all day long as kids make their way back from their McDonalds:Starbucks run, or sprinting out for their Uber Eats etc. The high schools are very hard to monitor as students are constantly opening doors or propping them for one another. I’m honestly feeling like the weapons detection system is almost going to be seen as a challenge by some kids. What can the brag about sneaking in? |
I work in a secondary school, and the doors are definitely not open all day at our school. |
How many school shootings have occurred in FCPS? Here's a hint: zero |
|
Because on Dec. 13, 2012, you know how many school shootings had occurred in Sandy Hook?
Here's a hint: zero. All it takes is one. Sandy Hook, Uvalde, Parkland, and pretty much every other school shooting out there were in locations where there had never been a school shooting before. All it takes is one. That's why schools have lockdown drills. That's why schools install weapons detectors and have children use clear backpacks. That's why some schools are being designed with curved hallways and hiding spots to prevent clear lines of sight. School systems aren't waiting until they have their first school shooting. They've been trying to find ways to proactively save the lives of your kids and their teachers as best they can. |
Trolls who dont have kids. Ignore. |
|
If fcps believes the schools need these metal detectors for safety, then they need to install enough of them and pay for the staff to man them so student arrival goes smoothly. That's
probably a dozen machines at the larger schools and multiple staff to monitor. They need the detectors staffed and manned all day until building use ends. Otherwise this prevents nothing. So which is it? If you think the detectors are necessary then you must support their proper deployment and staffing. |
