According to Dunne, weapon detectors will be at all middle and high schools in August.

Two scanners total at our giant high school-one for bus riders, one for everyone else. The bus riders are all let off the bus at an exact time BTW.

Now imagine 2800 kids walking ONE AT A TIME with their laptop out while their notebooks and other items set the scanner off.

Disappointing that WTOP did not mention the hour long lines to get into the building.

---------
The scanners, called OpenGate, are from the company CEIA. Students will walk through one at a time after taking their laptops out.

An alarm sounds if the scanner detects something that appears to be a weapon, though items like binders, umbrellas and metal lunch boxes could set it off too, according to the division’s website. The county is able to control the sensitivity level.

So you just bring in or make plastic weapons? I mean, come on.

There are a thousand ways kids can get weapons into a school building around the hour of security theater in the morning.

The traffic to get the buses and K&R loop through each morning is horrendous now. The kids barely make it on time in a 20 minute window. Will they extend the drop off time?

We have the hoodlums at West Potomac High School to thank for this.

Are they going to wait to start instruction in classes until the line is clear? My dd had a bunch of tardies at Westfield from the detectors, and that was with NO SENIORS attending school. So in fall they will have to process 700 more kids in 20 minutes?

Again, FCPS does NOT PLAN. They need to think through the logistics of their stupid ideas.

A giant waste of money. When FCPS cries for more funding, remember the millions wasted on this.

The article states that guns and knives were found being brought to school in the final weeks of school.

People complaining about tardies and logistics.... What about the fact that weapons were caught with just a limited run of these metal detectors?

I mean, so what? (If that's even true. I'd like to see some proof.) Weapons also were NOT caught-swiss army knives went through.

Unless they are going to staff metal detectors at every entrance from 6 am when the staff start to arrive to 10 pm when community use ends---- this is just theater. Its not keeping anyone safer and its not preventing any weapons from coming into the building.

Is it acceptable for you for 20,000 kids to be an hour late to class every day for the entire school year on the off chance they might catch a forgotten weapon in a backpack? Because anyone TRYING to bring a weapon to school is not going to be standing in line at the metal detector.

+100 am so done with fcps bonds. fire half of gatehouse, stop the consultants and stupid training, give teachers more money and back them up.

We are not the only school district to have metal detectors. I find it hard to believe that every high school student in the country is late for school. One students get used to the process it’ll go quicker.
