Summer Novelty Treats Ranked

Who else remembers the prefab sundaes in little cups with cardboard lids? I don't think they were actually as good as fudgciciles, but they were rarer.

Push pops! They have upscale ones at Dolcezza now, but they can’t beat the old strawberry sherbet push pops from the grocery store.

OK I didn't know wtf push pops were. Y'all are talking about freeze pops or freezie pops or freezies! What do you call them? (They can absolutely be on the list; they were a staple)

Push pops were the size and shape of toilet paper rolls! And had a flat plunger to PUSH the ice cream up.

What about bomb pops?

DQ Blizzard, every member of the family likes different things, but it's definitely a summer road trip thing for us

Anonymous wrote:I don’t think they exist anymore, but: Frozade. This was an intensely lemon flavored frozen treat, with a texture sort of like sippable sherbet. They were delicious— and I haven’t been able to find a copycat recipe or a vending cart that sells them.

Snowballs, Italian ice, and Chipwiches are great, but Frozade for the win.

Rita's lemon water ice sounds like that. On a hot hot day it's the perfect viscosity and it's intensely lemon with lemon bits in it. You need to get it at the beach.

Del’s frozen lemonade is a RI treat that is perfect (basically just what it sounds like). For a while my whole dream in life was to bring Del’s to DC.

And while I’m on the topic of New England cold treats— Hoodsies! Little cups of ice cream that were half chocolate and half vanilla packaged with a wooden “spoon”.

I need to hunt down a DQ. Haven't had one of these in ages.

Anonymous wrote:I am here for this very important and nuanced debate. While taste is of course the most important factor, one must also consider durability and repeatability.

Durability - If it's super hot or you're out in the sun, push-ups are the best, being somewhat self contained. Popsicles also melt a little more slowly. Ice cream sandwiches, while earning top points for taste, score very in this category.

Repeatability - how many can you/ do you want to eat? One Klondike bar is too much. I mean, you're going to finish it anyway, but those things are massive and messy and you're kind of disgusted with yourself by the end. Smaller items are preferable here, because "just one more" doesn't feel bad when you're eating small items. Plus, each new one is frozen, so less dripping. Mini drumsticks win this category.

And taste - ice cream sandwiches, of course. And no need to get fancy. The box of 20 for $6 is bomb.

You must not have had one in 20 yrs. They are anything but massive nowdays. They're 30-40% smaller with a much thinner coating of chocolate than in the 90s.

Yeah, probably about that long.

There's one in Springfield. Kids' sports teams are in there all the time.
