Would that be true of the entire Republican party, then, right now? I mean anyone can interpret what they want out of whatever they want. And, I think that is the problem. Religion is based on a lot of abstract concepts that can't ever be proved, so anyone can make it what they want it to be. Looks like the beginnjngs of Gilead at this time in history.

I think of slavery in this country. That was also based on biblical ideas. I think of the suppression and repression of women- all religion. I think of wars past and present- again.

Yeah - I was shocked to learn that good christians owned slaves and thought the Bible condoned it.

How do you define that as "good"?

No kidding. Plenty of faithful of all religions. And plenty of atheists.

Wouldn’t you agree?

I would disagree that many atheists are doing bad things "in the name of atheism" but I would say plenty of religious people of many religions are doing bad things in the name of their religion.

So many holy wars. So many people using the bible to subjugate certain people.

Yes, Jesus admonished these people:

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? — Luke 6:46

Even when Jesus was alive right in front of their faces, still there were people who used religion as a weapon, or to give the appearance of godliness to gain trust in order to run a money scam.

If you murder you are not obeying Jesus.

except killing in war is OK, right? It must be in the Bible somewhere.
Killing someone who is trying to kill you or those under your protection is not murder, it is self defense. A nation defending itself or allies is the same.

War is also how God judges nations such as in Deuteronomy 9:4

but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.

It is my opinion the pagan Asiatic peoples of the Western hemisphere were largely destroyed by Europeans is because they were “too far gone” in their wickedness.

I am very certain the destruction of Nazi Germany in WWII was due to Germany’s wickedness and its murderous policies towards Jews.

Wasn’t the destruction of the Jews because of their wickedness?

Yes he was living what his religion taught. It wasn't what Jesus taught but so many churches have bastardized religion to hate certain people... black people, gay people, transgender people, women who seek healthcare. So yes this is what religion teaches ... you just don't want to admit it or hold your specific religion responsible for their bastardization of Jesus's teachings.

Ahhh yes, the classic “bastardization of Jesus’s teachings” argument. This is the regular response from people who have spent little or no time really studying the teachings of Jesus Christ and have instead read some diatribes against Christianity which misquote Scripture and take passages out of context to shape their own agenda.

Have you read the four Gospels or just cherry picked a text and interpreted it for yourself? The New Testament? The Old Testament? Anything about Church history? I seriously doubt it.

The 20th century saw the most war deaths ever, many by atheists such as Stalin and Lenin.

I have 50 years of Catholic education so no.

The word homosexual was never used in the Bible until 1946.

I’ve been through the era of divorced people being denied communion, denied marriages outside “the church”, denied annulments unless you had money or power, denying baptism to “certain” people.

Girl get out of the book and get into the community.

Listen to the Holy Spirit not men at the pulpit.

Actually that is true some treat atheism as a religion.

If you’ve been enrolled in Catholic education for 50 years (?) and haven’t learned that The Holy Spirit guides the Church in Faith and Morals Teachings, then that’s a problem.

I am Catholic—a convert of 30 years—and am plenty involved in my community, thank you.

That’s not atheism. It anti-theism and/or secularism.

Neither anti-theism nor secularism are religions.

and through the ages, most war deaths were of religious people, on both sides. Europe now is very secular. Don't know, but maybe it was the effect of 2 world wars fought on it's soil

Also makes me think of how LGBTQ+ community is treated by Christians because it's "against their religion".

OP here. They may perceive themselves as faithful, but they are really most faithful to their sinful behavior. and No, I have not lumped Christians into one big pile based on the bad actions of a minority and flat out refused to acknowledge any goodness among Christians. Just look at the title of this thread: Not every religious is crazy, but it helps.

I persecute bad people and religion can make people bad, all the while thinking that they are good and doing god's will.

You know it's true.

What is the “certain kind of religion” you speak of?

No-one mentioned a “certain kind of religion” that I can see.

It’s a direct quote from the OP.

OP, what did you mean by that?
