But his position was either going away or being merged with another position in the budget process

It seems like he’s in the merged role as of July 1- Administrator of Gunston/Kenmore

This kind of hire is the result of XL WL. WL is too big to effectively manage, and has a huge constituency of high need students AND another constituency of high expectation parents — at least at ACPS no one goes in expecting a bumper crop of elite college placements.

No one is going to leave a job at a high performing high school or a middle school to take on this thankless role. For this appointment, he leaves the high stress job of ACHS and WL looks easy by comparison. Way less discipline problems, many more involved parents and it’s even a bit smaller.

What are the teachers actually afraid of? Doesn’t a principal mostly deal with Syphax any way, and day to day is the Vices job?

From what I’ve read teachers are mad that the process felt rushed and they weren’t listened to. It’s an issue that has been building for a long time in APS

I am curious whether he wanted it or if it was just that the staff likes him and wanted it. Either way I think it will be a bumpy few years for WL with dtaff shakeups.

Why can’t APS hire just a normal high school principal from a high performing system like FCPS or MCPS. I’d even take LCPS. We got the equity officer which is some made up job, why not a traditional administrator or educator for these roles? Do we not pay enough??

Like what about this middle school principal from Longfellow? Let’s court someone like this!! https://longfellowms.fcps.edu/features/welcome-principal-patrick

Jim Patrick spent five years at Longfellow Middle School and was great but he's just accepted a position at West Springfield High School.

That just a pull the name out of a hat example. But someone with an advanced degree and experience at a high performing school, even if just middle school.

No, this is a new role in addition to the principals.

What's going to happen with Wilmore is the bigger question. I wouldn't be happy "administering" two middle schools, whatever that role will entail.

ACHS has an opening lol.

Did anyone watch the school board meeting? I have been trying to but Vimeo is messing up on me.

How were his comments? Does he have plans to help boost college admissions rates and academic rigor? Why were teachers there — isn’t that their new boss?? Clearly no one spoke out against him, right??

Really? I think that sounds like a better role.

Two middle schools is still less work than his assigned population at XL Wl, and infractions will generally be less severe.

As a parent - Duncan definitely was able to bring more discipline to the school, especially after the December gang-related shutdown of ACHS. The enrollment in the alternative school quadrupled. There seemed to be fewer fights. He initially did not handle the two campuses .7 miles apart well - too heavy-handed with kids who walked because they actually wanted to get to class.
He did oversee the firing and reassignment of almost all deans and APs just last year to bring in his people. Decisions as to who stayed and went seemed to be driven by race.
W-L could do much much better, and, hopefully, ACHS will, however it seems as if the job is just too much to have any long term stability.

Wow I expected you to say personal relations, that caught me off guard.

His introduction by SB:

“Brings a proven track record of of instructional leadership, school transformation, and a deep commitment to equity and student success”

Is instructional leadership saying he will bring rigor and accountability to academic performance?

Why are we still emphasizing equity as a primary driver. Just say student success for all students, why do we have these trigger words?

School transformation — is WL having problems, does it NEED a TRANSFORMATION??
