Do you do something special for your high schooler when they get straight As?

I believe it's traditional to say, "I got good grades, too."

good point, maybe I will just beat them when they don't get straight As

Are they counting A- also? My DD and her friends work hard for their grades at her FCPS high school, and it does not seem like everyone gets As easily.

My parents tried cash rewards but it didn't work. My kids get straight As and they aren't any smarter than me so I figure that it's grade inflation.

I didn’t. Two of mine have special needs and didn’t have the capacity to get good grades and the third had high internal drive. However, I did pay for correct spelling words in ES when it was the push that was needed to help one of them persevere in the endeavor to memorize them.

So for me, if your kid needs you to reward them in order to get good grades, then it’s a great idea if you can. But if not, a successful reporting period, whatever that means for your kids, is worth celebrating with ice cream or pizza.

We let them pick a restaurant for a celebratory dinner. (They usually pick something obnoxiously expensive.) We're still doing that for summer after each college year, too!

?
Special needs should be accommodated so they have the opportunity to earn As on appropriately leveled challenges.

It's OK if you want to challenge above and beyond and end up with some Bs (and you are lucky in a sense that you can do that while the straight A students cannot find appropriate challenges), but it shouldn't be required.

Graduating with over 4.0 doesn’t mean got straight As. OP is asking about getting all As and not weighted GPA of 4.0. The linked article says “ 99 Valedictory Scholars earned cumulative GPAs of 4.0 or higher” not 99 got all As.

Anyone else do anything for their kids? I think straight As is a big deal; would like to celebrate it somehow. But the kid is not super materialistic.

They get a golf clap and then we’re on to the next semester. I expect straight A’s.

This.
Never understood paying kids for grades.

The reason kids end up in therapy during college is because grade inflation ends the second you finish your last exam in high school.

Me too! Free donut for every A on the report card. We don’t have one near us, but have gone when were near one.

Meh - our two got straight As in HS and college, Dean's list every semester, one graduated Summa Cum Laude, the other one likely will when they graduate next year.

Sometimes it's grade inflation, sometimes it's the kid. BTW, the kuddos goes to them, we as parents didn't do anything special, no supplementing, tutors, etc., just high expectations

You should know that colleges have grade inflation as well. Check the stats if you are in doubt.

Dean’s List isn’t hard and doesn’t require all As.

Yes! My child goes to a magnet STEM school where it is extremely challenging to get As- and they are all smart kids that test in. About 10% of seniors graduate with a 4.0 unweighted.
