I'm obsessed with this Pittsburgh home

It had a dumb waiter, a laundry chute to the basement, and a button on the dining room floor to call the staff. Also very close to amazing sledding. Those were the days.

That is very cool, indeed!
Did it have a back staircase as well?

OP here. She's 27, went to undergrad at Pitt, and absolutely loves this house. She lived in a similar building for a semester and misses the vibe.

If you think Pittsburg is a good value try Cleveland, there are beautiful homes there that go for less than a townhome in desirable parts of VA.

A true mansion (not a McMansion) for $1.8 million.

What neighborhoods is she looking at?

My cousin similar age lives in Shady Side and loves it.

I need to move to Pittsburgh.

I could pay cash for that house and money to upgrade by selling my n Arlington home.

Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Oakland, Highland Park, and Lawrenceville mostly. She could never afford a home here, but she's thinking she might actually be able to buy a place in Pittsburgh next year when she finishes her master's degree.

The kitchen isn’t pretty, but it was built in a time where kitchens were closed off from the rest of the house and not expected to be pretty because it is a utilitarian space. Personally I’m game for not having a kitchen open for all to see.

Open floor plans suck. It makes me sad whenever I see a flip of a beautiful 1920s home with the entire first floor opened up into a horrible cavernous space.

Open floor plan has some downsides but I think I would have been seriously depressed with a closed kitchen as my kids were growing up. I spent so much time in the kitchen cooking, cleaning, getting them snacks etc.—- having it open to the family room where they were playing made me feel less like a scullery maid and more like part of the family.
